Internet problems again...
    #8613307 - 07/09/08 02:30 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Okay thanks in advance you guys will be a big help... I don't frequent many places(forums) so I need help here. after arriving home  last night I turn on my computer and then it does an automatic update... Afterwards I decide to just play halo and not surf yet. After playing some halo I take a break and then I try to surf the net.... Everytime it says the connection times-out... Aim doesn't even work. Nothing works. This computer that I'm on right now is connected to the same exact router that I use my real computer on thats having the time-out problems... Now I remember something I posted couldve possibly be a dns problem but thats when some pages worked... Here no pages work and everything else connected to the router can log on (xbox, this computer).

Now I tried opening my tower and just reattaching the ethernet card. No luck.

So Now I'm here and wondering if you guys can help.

WON.

Alright u guys get this I beleive my isp has blocked my IP address because I've been torrenting... I run peerguardian and zone alarm but I guess that wasn't enough for them to track me or know I was doing all this.... Man I gotta stop sharing now. I used a program called hideip that allows me back on the internet... I never even got a warning...

Do you think I should try calling them if they are too persistent? Man...

Well all those programs on your side won't help cuz your ISP will still be able to see what your doing.  If they specifically mentioned torrents, and they're not lieing- which they probably are I'd guess but don't really know, then you could evade their detection by using encryption on your client I believe.  If interested wait for others to chime it and confirm they can't tell what the data is for if its encrypted using common client implementations of this.

But if the reason is really excessive usage, or hell even if its not and they just don't like you using torrents, I'd get a copy of your contract ASAP.

Do you have a contract?  Are you bound to continue service for so long?  If you are contracted read that bitch.  If they advertise unlimited downloads I'd personally send a nasty letter to their legal department, and then sue if they don't let you back on.  Even if you're not under contract you may still have recourse via this method but would be harder... you'd have to hit them with a false advertising/trade if they advertise unlimited downloading/use.

This shit pisses me off.  ISPs advertise unlimited use but then throttle, as comcast did and now claims not to I believe, and disconects you in severe cases.  Bullshit, you advertise unlimited use, you provide it- especially if your under contract.

I think the unlimited use model is stupid as hell personally, though it benifits me greatly I'm probably just transfering my burden to the other subscribers who aren't downloading gb's a week/day depnding on what I'm doing.

But whatever... they made the stupid decision to offer the service, they better provide it.  They can change their advertising and contract whenever they want, but they can't advertise unlimited use and then throttle your bandwidth below similar subscribers/what you'd otherwise get... just cuz they don't wanna live up to their stupid claim intended to appeal to tech-illiterate households most likely.

Okay I will call them and ask for a contract or where I can read one. Comcast does provide reliable internet other than this bullshit. And also them nowadays restricting one cable modem per household/service. This really makes me not like them. I wonder if charter does the same thing. I rememeber back when you could register multiple modems so you wouldn't need a router...

Yeah I should probably but the thing is I also get my phone and television from them... I guess charter would have to match or be better somehow for me to actually really switch... Or if they don't lift this ip block on my service I have with them. Man I don't even share that much. I just started really downloading movies and albums and its probably a total of 10 to 15 GB over a course of 2 to 3 months. Really sucks but good thing i have this hideip program...

They are probably not blocking you, but if your torrent client is running during your normal usage (gaming/browsing) it can saturate your bandwidth to a level that doesn't allow much if any other traffic.  There is also a chance that the torrents/torrent client is leaving a bunch of half open connections in your router and bogging down the processor in it, a reset of the router will fix this, but its still a pain in the ass.

peace

Do you have zone alarm? If so, then the latest M$ update makes it not work. The solution is to go to add/remove programs, click "include updates" at the top, scroll down and it shold be the last one. Remove it and you will be fine. If that's the problem. Might be something else but that's what happened to me. Did it happen late 7-8 or early 7-9?

Yeah, my Zonealarm recently started blocking everything too. I had to uninstall it to get a connection.

yeah thats it. Whew that really allieviates a lot of pressure because I want torrents... And I haVe to really correct myself I think i've torrented about 100 gigs so far. Its friggin sweet. That's too bad zone alarm does that I really liked them most of all... I might just pay for the programmers or not and just get more gas.

and it looks like supra was right all along... Thanks you guys anyway. Big help everytime.

Nothing wrong with zone alarm, I'm back to using it. It was the malware from Micro$oft that screwed us up. Deliberate I'm sure. Do not uninstall zone alarm, uninstall the july 8, 2008 M$ update. M$ is crap anyway. If everything wasn't set to work only on it I'd use one of the other systems like Linux.

If only people like you used Linux, then not everything would be written to run on M$ crap.

One of those chicken/egg problems.  :frown:

thanks a bunch man... I shouldve known it was the update. I didn't like the ip hiding program cuz i would see peerguardian blocking a bunch of ips right when i opened the program.... Do you have a legit version of ZA? Good thing i can just edit the update... I better turn auto update off i guess.

Thanks again.

I think zone alarm may have an update which stops the M$ malware from working. Go to their site.

Want to hear the latest tricks from those crooks at MS? Now they send out a new update which also blocks ZA. They give you little to no options about it, every 10 minutes you get a prompt and your only option is to take the update and restart your computer or click "later". Later means in another 10 minutes you get the same prompt forever until you cave in. And get this, the new update can not be removed! I tried to and I got the message that it could not be found. I had to disable ZA. Fuckin jerks!!
