I snapped these earlier today after finally acquiring permission to venture onto the property. The zonate appearance is somewhat faded but they are subbs. I will take a few pictures of all the collected specimens and also prepare micrographs later on today.

nice photos!! And just out of curiosity, how did you go about "asking permission?" I have always wondered this. Did you straight up tell the owner of the property that you wanted to hunt for mushrooms? Or did you give a more elaborate story?

Lovely finds. Dung lovers too. I wonder if they are stronger than the grass growers. I guess it would depend on the substrate, and perhaps the availability of nitrogen or even more complex precursors like tryptophan. You've had a lot of rain out your way lately, correct?

Thanks all… I was very pleased to find this, though subbs are not all that uncommon in dung in north eastern Kansas, not the most abundant mushroom, but certainly not rare.
We have had very consistent rainfall this spring which helps things along.
I can’t really tell you about comparative potency between dung and grass growers as I’ve never really retained such information… and I have no intentions of conducting a bioassay with this collection. About half of them will be distributed among members of the local mycological society with the other half going to the university herbarium.
I was slightly nervous while collecting these. Given my appearance, the casual observer driving by would not mistake me for a farmer engaging in standard procedure cow stuff. I'm sure they would likely assume I was involved in collecting mushrooms which are illegal to possess and consume, call the police, and the doom's day scenario of my darkest nightmares would ensue. So yeah, despite having permission from the land owner, I was a bit weary of collecting in a spot so clearly visible to people driving by.
I won't deny it... this will sound like a gross exaggeration, however, if I was willing to sustain the weird looks and a multitude of chigger bites, I’m sure I could have collected a pound or more. It was one of those situations where you had to watch your step.
DJbacon06: I was given permission after delivering a spiel about belonging to a mycological society and mentioning my intent to donate mushroom specimens to the university… blah blah blah pretty much, nothing too creative, elaborate, or untrue for that matter. I think the guy would have given permission regardless of any expressed intent.
I’m still working on micrographs, unfortunately the relatively fragile gill structure of this mushroom is not responding well to my terribly dull razor. I might have to run out and pick up a new box because I’ve ruined like five mushrooms trying to get a good section.

Yeah, true. But either way, I never knew a good way to actually ask permission. And besides, many people can't tell the difference between actives and non-actives anyway.

I don't think I would have the balls to just go up to the door and ask although I have really wanted to. I've been looking for a good area with horse that would be discrete but I have yet to find one. Good finds and props for having the balls to go up and get permission.

Excellent work georgeM. Hope you can get yourself some decent spore prints from them.
I also prefer to pick in peace, with no one else watching.
Also, kudos on getting permission.

I know this is an old post but georgy....what kind of mushies are these on this cow pewp? Those are almost exactly like the ones on the haybale I found in the mysteriously dumped unknown spore solution. That was actually known to me.... I just did an experiment... I let nature take the course.
*I have to add that I was going to view the spores under microscope but I tripped while outside carrying the solution and it landed on the side of an old haybale. The mysterious mushies showed up a few days to a week later and they were all over it. Also came f'ing face to face with a 4 foot snake....mostly harmless....scared the shit out of me though. It was on top of the haybale.... I guess it was the guardian of the shrooms.
So anyways...what kind of shrooms are those?

Senor gots it... I haven't checked that spot a single time this year even though its just a short walk from my house. Maybe i should go at least grab some manure from that field for my garden.
