Making things pin...
    #861170 - 09/03/02 09:42 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I found these pictures.... the first one is 3qts of millet, cased witha bout an inch of 3n1.

Lots of growth... but how would someone with something looking like this get it to pin? This is a closeup of the growth..

Assuming they can?t drop the temperature, because the container is too big to fit in their fridge.

If the container is exposed to light and fresh oxygen (Via fanning), this should pin, correct? How long would it take, assuming that box has been exposed to fruiting conditions (light/air) for 3 days now.. If it doesn?t pin, what should someone in this situation do?

I recommend dropping the temperature to around 22-23*C for best results.

Aye.. if I remember reading correctly at the site where I got this picture from, the temp that box was kept in was about 28c.
The guy said he couldn't really regulate the temperature that well.
It was in a place that doesn't get a lot of air circulation, and the temps range from 75-88 degress f.

I hope it stays in the low end of the gradient most of the time.

Sadly no, not currently... it hovers around the middle/high end.
Dipping into the lower parts only at night. (12-6am)
Is all hope lost, or is it just gonna be a real bitch to get it to pin... hypothetically, of course.

I have seen pins form outside when the temperatures were higher than 88*F.  I have no experiences with such high temperatures indoors, though.  I have an air conditioner that works quite well.

Then try outdoors if you fail inside. You still have time to get some outdoor goodness going.

I don't cultivate
I just found this pictures and was pondering possibilities *nod*

*ahem* but uh.. yea.. the only reason this particular casing wouldn't be able to have it's temperature dropped is the size of it I assume. It looks to be a rather large rubbermaid container. Probably something like this....  container
but a bit larger...

One could theoretically go to the gas station and grab a couple of bags of ice, and place them in the general vicinity of said casing (not touching of course, that could cause damage) to lower the relative temperature enough to induce pinning-- you might want to put this ice inside of trash bags so it doesnt leak everywhere, and when it gets melted, replace it over a period of a couple of days. Ice is only a 1.50 a bag tops   you should only need a  couple of bags a day.

Would someone doing this have to keep the temperature dropped? Or would one day of lower temperatures be enough to initiate pinning?

I believe the strain is GT if that's any matter..

You only really need to cold shock for 12 - 24 hours.
After that a couple degrees dropped will continue the fruiting process.
I just take the racks out of my fridge and stack the tubs in there.

Well I looked back on the site where I found those pictures...
It looks like the guy posted some more, seems as if his entire casing layer has been colonized, even though they?ve been exposed to fruiting conditions for the past 5 days.

Hmmn.. look

Everything is all ropey/rhizmorphic, it just refuses to pin.

Should he re-case?

I wouldn't. I would be patient and wait.
