100% coir spawn (first attempt) -- oatman2000's tek (pics and journalized)

Here's my first attempt at a 100%25 coir spawn (oatman 2000's tek):
I chose to line the entire box with foil rather than just the inside just because it was easier with the type of foil I had.. I'm sure lining just the bottom part works just as well.
I did 2 bricks of coir with 2 gallons of boiling water and left it in the bucket for an hour before mixing it around and putting it in the 12qt sweater boxes. I should have waited longer. An hour is probably ok for 1 brick but 2 takes significantly longer to cool down to a temperature that's cool enough for handling. By the time I got about half way down the bucket I hit the hotter coir and I am hoping it didn't hurt the myc even though I tried to cool it down a bit. so for reference I'd say a couple of hours of cool down time for 2 bricks.
I used 3 quart spawn jars 1 jar for each tub. 1 ecuador and 2 PESA.
I laid down the coir bed about 3-4 inches thick along the bottom of the tub.
I then used about half the jar in the center of the substrate and mixed that in thoroughly so that the entire bed was mixed up with myc for faster colonizing.
After that I put some more coir on top of the myc and laid down the rest of the jar on top evenly layered across the bed.
The last one I had too much left in the jar to leave on top of the bed so I mixed it just a bit in the upper layer of the substrate so it would have something to munch on
I covered the top with foil and punched pencil sized holes - then covered with micropore tape for gas exchange.
So in about 10 days we should know whether I did this all right or all wrong
Special thanks to oatman2000 for this tek - straight forward and to the point... exactly the way I like the ladies
Note: During this tek I got so caught up in exactly following the tek as laid out by oatman that I forgot I wanted to add a bit of vermiculite to the mix for aeration. I don't think this will cause much of a problem because the coir is moist enough and it seems very airy so I don't see a clumping problem too much for the amount of time it will need to colonize. Guess I'll find out soon enough
Party on!

Update: July 13th
Here's the pics from the 5th day of substrate colonization.
I'm thinking in a couple of more days they should be pretty much ready to case and fruit!

Looks nice. I can't wait to see what it does during fruiting. I think you'll be happy.

Yeah I think so too. They're fluffy and gorgeous right now =) I'm trying to decide on how to case - i have jiffy mix and coarse verm on site, but I think I will need to add some gypsum to balance the ph over the long term. Gotta order that so it'll be here in time for casing these bad boys. Maybe some crushed oyster shells too for good measure.

The only one thing i see wrong, well, undesirable, not wrong, is the shallow substrate depth, otherwise it looks GREAT!

The substrate is 4" deep. it's covered with foil all the way down. These are 12qt sweater boxes and are almost filled to the top leaving just enough room for a casing layer. The pictures are deceiving because I barely lifted the foil to take the shots.

So coir is nutritious enough to be used as substrate, and is often used in casing layers? Anyone want to help me understand this better?

I don't think I'd use coir as a casing layer for that exact reason. It'd just extend my substrate rather than case the microclimate. But I have heard of others using it .. maybe they sterilized it and killed off the nutes first? I don't know. I'm going to stick with coir subs and 50/50+ casing I think.

Sterilizing doesn't kill nutrients for nutrients aren't living things. Nor does it degrade them. Imagine "killing" all the nutrients in your grain when you PC'd it.

good point - then I don't know how they make it work. I would think that if you have coir substrate and coir casing it would just look at the coir as another sub layer and eat right through it. I'm not sure how it'd work if you used a different substrate then cased with coir, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me. All I know is my myc is loving this coir.. it's only been 5 days and it's almost ready to be cased. I've heard of it taking up to 10 days before casing so I'm going to wait another couple of days for good measure to make sure it eats through the bottom layers of sub as well.

I posted a thread asking the question. Maybe you need a close eye to initiate pinning before it colonizes the coir. Seems this could become an overlay issue for later flushes though. I dunno, we will see.

Cased the 3 tubs today with jiffy mix/verm 85% 15% mix that was pasteurized the same way as the coir (boiling water then strained and cooled before mixing in the verm - put them in the FC at 93% RH

I was just reading that actually. So I should just cover these back up and wait then? Does the cover need to be aerated or can I just use lids with no holes to hold in the moisture? I guess I'm confused about the point of covering it up again since myc can't see through the casing layer anyway and the fc is holding the humidity at a high level 95-97% rh which should keep the casing layer moist enough. I know there's a reason I'm just trying to understand what it is =)
Edit:
I went ahead and pulled the trays out of the FC and drilled some holes in the plastic lids and covered those with micropore tape for gas exchange (in case it's needed which I'm not sure it is right now) I put them into a closet that's a little warmer than the FC which was 73 degrees at the time (a bit low). I'm not sure what the temp is in the closet but I know it's at least a couple of degrees higher. That's the best I can do without putting them outside in scorching 90+ heat which would be bad for them. So at this point I'm supposed to wait another 3 days for them to pop up through the casing and patch then into the FC from what hyphae's tek says. I've been working on these so long I want them to do well so I'm gonna follow it to a T and hope for the best. These 3 trays look like strong colonizers and so I'm hoping they'll fruit well. I wasn't aware that the pinset for the 2nd and 3rd flushes were created at the initial flush. That's good to know.. now I understand more about why the initial pinning is so important.
Thanks for the heads up.
