Creative ways to compress straw.
    #8609313 - 07/08/08 06:14 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

So I have been cutting straw by hand (I have really strong hands) for like 5 months straight now, and I've been captivated by this idea of a straw log, not mention my fruiting chamber is of good length and size, but I was wondering if someone had some creative ways to repeated compressing straw as in not stuffing it in a plastic tube and then cutting away.
Like maybe a really thick plastic bag that was like 30 gallons and then you could squeeze shut and tie it, making sure to compress the straw as much as possible. And then to fruit it you just untied it? Reusable! Comments, Ideas where are yoooooooou?!

give your posts time.  jeez.

Getting extra thick walled plastic and building a filling frame is your best bet.  It would allow you to tamp with something heavy like a post driver in between spawn layers.

wouldnt be very effective, vacuum packing would compress it as
would tamping it into a PVC pipe with a clean out plug on the end

30 gallons seems rather large....I think the larger you make these things the more likely they are to contam. But I have never done straw. You can buy some large super thick bags from Uline. Or you could just use a laundry basket with holes on all four sides. I've heard stories of 2 pounds of oysters coming from one of those beasts.

If you drill holes all the way up and down, then pack you can fruit directly from the pvc pipe (makes it very easy to harvest without damaging the mycelium).  Plus, just dunk it in a bleach bath in between batches to sterilize.  Also, it has the benefit of being completely adaptable in diameter and length.  Be sure to place at least one hole in the bottom cap to ensure drainage of excess liquid and metabolites.

Damn I haven't been to the Shroomery in along time. Why would you want to compress straw? Will you be mixing with hpoo then compressing? Or compressing then mixing. Or are you guys are spawning to straight straw now?

Maybe I missed a detail but packing straw into an UNOPENABLE  pvc tube is a bad idea. Did I miss the part where you could open it up somehow so you don't have to force a colonized cylinder of mycelium and straw out of a PVC pipe so it can fruit.

Hey to each his own...If you wanna continue to do stuff the old way, go ahead.  There are far better teks nowadays.  But like you said to each his own.

WHat the hell are you two talking about. All I asked was for ideas concerning compressing straw, I think I'm going to have to stick with the tried and true and just buy the plastic tubing if I can find it cheap enough say 40 dollars?

BlargIamdead
Im not so educated about laundry baskets. Seem like the mushroom would want to fruit even where there no hole like they do in straw logs. Wouldnt that be a problem.
Im not sure if I can find poly tubing cheap enough. Maybe a laundry basket would be a cheaper and reusable idea.

there will always be new, different "teks" that are "better"

the simple truth is living within the box of "teks" is what prevents better "teks" from being discovered.

read a book on whatever fungus you want to grow, attempt to recreate that environment, and practice good cleaning habits and methodical sterility. the rest is left to the creative mind behind the grow, and whatever knowledge they derive from these "teks" to aid them along.

Yo prisoner. I was thinking of cutting the PVC pipe into 2 pieces the long way and then attached some hinges. What ya think.
I guess your reffering to the the cap thing ion the picture? I would have to push the myclium/straw cylinder out of one of the end. Thats a good idea?

With the hinges I could open it up to see if was fully colonized too. I dont know. just a thought.

If people didnt experiment we would be where we are today...These newer teks work much better than the older ones.  All im sayin if it aint broke dont fix it.  If someone likes a tek and it works for them thats great.  My bad for rantin on your post Camplo.

Just read back and probably have the wrong end of the stick.
I'm guessing these logs are pretty big and I was thinking small.

My thought process was the smaller the pieces the less need to compress.
So for instance if you ground straw into a flour you wouldn't need to compress it at all...

Are you wanting to do away with cutting it altogether?
Why do peple say cut straw into pieces no longer than 4"?

I think what prisoner was referring to was letting it fruit right from the pvc log.  I've done those with 3/8" holes drilled four inches apart down the length of the pipe.  Tape over the holes with micropore tape during colonization, and then remove the tape for fruiting.  If you use that method, alternate spawn and straw while packing, and pack it with most of your weight.

Straw has to be cut into 1" to 4" pieces to make it easier for the mycelium to penetrate into the center.  We can pack it tight because there's so much air in straw, as you can see from the microscope picture below of a cross section of a piece of wheat straw.

Okie doke I'm feeling this PVC pipe deal I just cannot use my unexperienced mind to figure out where the hell the fruiting surface would be! Its going to fruit out the 3/8" inch holes? Please help me paint the picture in my mind.
Where is the fruit surface.
Will this set up give me an efficiency any where near the traditional poly tube way?

Mushrooms will grow through those small holes. Keep in mind that the cellular expansion of mushrooms is amazing in proportion to their small starting size.  Because mushrooms are largely water, think of them like your bathtub. You only need very, very small pipes to deliver a lot of water to them to fill a very large space in a small amount of time.  Despite the volume of the tub, most houses only have ~1/2 inch water pipes delivering the "goods" throughout the house.  They can go through very small holes even though the volume of the final product is dramatically larger.

Forgive the analogy.  It was the best "off the cuff" I could come up with.
