reformatting troubles
    #8608915 - 07/08/08 04:30 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

i'm trying to repair a family member's desktop by wiping it clean.  wanna reformat and reinstall windows.  I've got several bootable XP disks, and i've done this several times before, so the fact that i'm having trouble is quite irksome.

so anyways, every single time i boot windows xp setup from any of the CDs, i get a blue-screened error message telling me that the hdd is fucked: "Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF79BA524, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)".  it suggests i check for viruses (i have), check to make sure that the HDD is connected and configured properly (if it weren't, i wouldn't be able to be on here right now), and to run chkdsk (which i have, with no errors found).

the hdd is a 200gig SATA seagate.  i don't know what to do.  suggestions?

Strange. I would try to get into the BIOS and set the CD containing WinXP as the primary boot drive and then reset the computer. That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Did you check the MS KB?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

That has several ideas. Try creating a new boot sector by going into the recovery console and typing "fixboot"

From what I remember, the above two (XP and SATA) don't mix.  The original XP does not support SATA disks.  You need to slipstream SP2 or SP3 and try to install from that.

If you have the disc set to use RAID or even ACHI in the bios, then it will not work with the XP install discs unless you first install a raid driver.  Many motherboards have an IDE mode you can set on the SATA ports, that way the disc will work fine and install, but you will not be able to use RAID unless you start over, as it has to be installed before the OS.  There is a work around to switch over to ACHI after install, so that you can still gain the advantages of using SATA, I did it and it worked fine.

In the end, boot into bios and see if you can change the SATA ports to emulate IDE, mine has these options under the SATA CONTROLLER line

IDE
ACHI
RAID

so, only IDE will work without a seperate driver.  If you get the driver, when you boot to the disc and start the reformat/reinstall, it will say at the bottom 'press f6 to install a 3rd party raid driver', which is what you will have to do.

peace
