Quote:
In this chapter, we have presented observations and hypotheses bearing upon the use of amphetamines among a group of hippie subjects. We have suggested that an understanding of the motives and personality characteristics underlying the transition from psychedelic drugs to amphetamines is important to any consideration of the cultural changes in patterns of drug abuse. An analysis of our subjects' phenomenological descriptions of their amphetamine and psychedelic experiences suggests that those subjects who make a transition to the concomitant or predominant use of amphetamines do so either because of the increased anxiety and lack of motivation related to their use of psychedelics or because of personality characteristics which make the use of psychedelics intolerable to them.
• Among this group of former psychedelic users who have made a. transition to the use of amphetamines are a number of subjects whose use of psychedelics was Unusually great for a relatively brief span. It is possible that these subjects, one of whom claims to have taken one to three LSD "trips" daily for a six-month period, quickly develop tolerance for the drug. In this way, they are able to avoid experiences which they could not otherwise tolerate, and at the same time remain bona fide members of the drug culture. These subjects may also turn to the use of barbiturates, narcotics, or other psychotropic drugs in their search for an altered state of consciousness that they can tolerate. In subsequent papers, we will attempt to show that the ultimate choice of a drug can be predicted from the nature of the user's initial response to psychedelic drugs.
I'm still young and haven't seen drug use patterns unfold fully yet. People are still experimenting and it will take some time for people to settle into beer after work, chain smoking weed, popping downers, etc. However, in school I've taken enough adderall to study for a test to get euphoric feelings along with the focused edge of amphetamine. The quick thoughts and awareness resemble psychedelics, but the diminished ego and notion that everything is connected isn't present. The euphoria, sociability, focus, and quick thinking are all extremely appealing. I've read plenty of reports about amphetamine psychosis and know better than to go off the deep end with the stuff, but I can see how people could get into the habit like people do with downers and alcohol.
Everyone's mind isn't necessarily cut out for tripping. Staying with the theme of the article, I've watched my own drug use evolve along with my friends. I've seen friends take psychedelics and continue to try more. Others have one or two trips and don't like where it puts them. Personality in my mind is the thing that shapes drug choice and frequency of use. So, how has your personality and current place in life affected your use?
For myself I've played around with about every general class of drugs, but I'm aware I haven't "done every drug there is." When I was depressed my drug of choice was alcohol. I liked the cheer it gave me and got me more social. After a while drinking regularly feels like poison and I knew it wasn't sustainable. Downers were nice, but too boring and withdrawal sucked so bad. I'm still experimenting but when it gets down to it, I think I'll be toking and tripping for many years and occasionally have a weekend on something different. The search for understanding keeps me tripping and the slightly psychedelic nature of marijuana keeps me smoking. How about you?

The drug I enjoy the most is psychedelic mushrooms. I mostly smoke weed but with all they're combined pieces of the puzzle, 'shrooms are my favorite.

non psychedelic drugs are tangential to the circle of my life.
I have tried a few and liked them, but they are not valuable to me.
I would not take an afternoon off work for a cocaine connection or something like that, but I would definitely arrange things around an lsd or shroom opportunity, in the same way as I would make time for my doctor or my bank manager.
life has it's priorities.

Well i mean i started abusing percocetes after my first mushroom uses... off it for now though.... haven't shroomed in about half a year as well.... my third eye is very weakened
Can't wait to re-kindle it.
Psychedelics are the only kinds of "drugs" i feel better after using. That is why they are my first choice, when it comes to enlightening myself.

There's no doubt that I do drugs to get fucked up as much (more so) than for intellectual purposes. But from that standpoint, I don't really need anything other than beer and weed.
