Possible bug-spot
    #860782 - 09/03/02 06:27 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Think I may have spotted a bug, although I'm new to the boards and don't really understand how the picture system works yet, so perhaps not.

Anyway, I was wondering why some of the threads were taking an age to load, and when I right-clicked and did properties on some of the pics I found that they were about 40k and upto around 500x500 pixels!  Instead of just a 4k 70x70 pic.

Anyway, I went to sort out my own avatar, and then when I tried to upload it and hit Submit I got an error saying something like, "Error:  pictures must be below bytes in size."  For some reason, it's not giving any value for the picture size, and so this seems to be stopping people uploading them.  I used my picture space upload thing, though, and sorted out my avatar using that.  Of course, this way does not do any verification on the size of the uploaded pic, so that's how some avatar pictures are currently MASSIVE   Seems like this could be a real big drain on your bandwidth, so I hope this is useful.

Yes, clearly some folks could make a little more effort on image treatment and compression than they do...

Definitely   It's clearly causing the site to consume a lot more bandwidth than it should.  But if the avatar upload facility was fixed then it would probably mean that most folks would be forced to keep their pics under 4k or so. No point in people using massive 60k images for avatars when they just get rezsized to 70x70 anyway
