The only secure computer is an unplugged computer.  Stay off the network and don't load any software.

I'm aware of this.

I patch my shit, upgrade my shit and check securiteam etc for vulns, use iptables, have a hardware firewall etc,  but this isn't what I mean.

I mean how can I make my communication more secure? I figure pgp is a good starting point so I'm compiling gnupg. How else can I make the information stored on my computer more secure?

When I install a new debian box it lets me set up an encrypted volume.  You type in a password and then you need that password to mount the drive in the future.

Since the screen lock kicks in after a few minutes, anyone who came in and took your computer would have to get the password out of you before they can do any forensics.

If you have already installed its pretty easy to add a new encrypted volume, but encrypting your current one would probably require backing up the data, encrypting the partition, and copying the data back into the encrypted partition.

I have used encrypted partitions on all my machines for two years now and they haven't given me any problems.

To browse the web ssh into the remote host with the -D flag.

$ ssh -D3128 unix.host.org

Then set your web browser to use a SOCKS proxy on port 3128.

If you combine the above steps with gpg for emails and configure your machines and firewalls properly, you won't have any security problems.

Encrypted swap and possibly home partition(you do have /home on its own partition, right?), truecrypt for removable drives, gpg to encrypt email, turning off unneeded ports, turn root off and use sudo, tor/vadilia and noscript firefox extension, good passwords and a million other things. All of which help.
