Bought Supplies

I will be a first timer at this, so wish me luck!
These are the supplies I bought at wally world today, with the exception of the BRF, which I bought at Tom Thumb.
Total was just at $13.00! Only thing I have left to buy is the vermiculite, and ship out my order of Cambodian's to Ralphsters tomorrow!
Now, a question: the plastic tub I bought is not completely airtight, will this be okay? I bought it because it is about the perfect size to fit the space Im putting it in, and to fit maybe 3 BRF cakes in it.
Edit: Also, the plastic jars I bought have an indention on the lids, will they still be able to have inoculation holes in the lids and have aluminum foil over them? And can they be steamed sterilized without melting?

Personally I would go spend the $7 or 8 dollars on a case of half pint canning jars. I wouldnt waste my time with plastic. Peace.

Good luck man. Few things, search function, Learn It, Love It, Live It. I'm about half-way through my first grow and cruising this site has crammed my brain with info. For starters I'd search for the RR Shotgun FC Tek. Looks like your tub is pretty small. Might not hold many cakes as you stated. Per your jars, if you can find them switch to canning jars.

Yea...The plastic jars will warp leaving the tops not to fit on real well. If its real durable plastic you should be fine for 1 maybe 3 uses, but you will want to get some glass wide mouth jars.

Well, I just read up on the microwave tek, and I think I am going to try 2 jars in the microwave and 2 jars steam sterilizing on the stove and see how they turnout! I will probably switch to glass canning jars right after though.

Ok before you waste you time and materials, let me say that the microwave tek isnt all that it is cracked up to be. Use the stemaing tek as in the pf tek, it is tried and true. There is alot of controversy about the microwave tek, alot of folks here say that it doesnt work. Dont waste you time man. Peace.

I get the impression mason jars are not an option. When my buddy had to sterilize plastic she used the microwave 3min bursts here and there. Supposedly u dont have to PC cakes but u should probably steam heat verm/brf mixture @ the least..... I agree with the comment above though. Do it the right way dude.

They are an option. Walmart has the 1/2 pt. Kerr canning jars with lids, 12 for like $7.50 or something, and I didn't have enough money with me today so I bought those five 1/2 pt plastic ones for like $1.30.
I guess I will make a trip back to Walmart tomorrow!

You will be happy in the long run. The glass ones wont melt on you, and as long as you dont break them or get a bad contam you dont have to replace them at all. Peace.

Wickedsick, You are indeed "wicked sick" The shotgun tek is tried and true. It is acceptable for situations where you have to set it and forget it. I agree that FAE is better provided with manual or electric means. Some of us work 10+ hour in a day so automation is the way to go. If automation is not an option then the shotgun tek will suffice. Sometimes I can't get to my grow for days at a time. If you havn't seen my tek, here it is..... Hasn't failed me yet.

Those are the tubs that I use and you can put up to 3 cakes in them.. Also I put painters plastic in between the lids and the tub for a more airtight seal... Do yourself a favor and buy wide mouth half pint jars..

Yea the shotgun TEK has worked for...Probably hundreds if not thousands of us(might be overkill so what never know who has been stopping by). I would still want to fan the FC using the shotgun TEK, but it is much more forgiving.

Your tek is genius man. I might have to send you some messages to ask a few questions I think I get the general idea, but I may or may not run into some problems. I'm building one though. You get 5 for that...Genius.

You want something that will allow the cake to slide out of the jar when it is finished colonizing. If the rim of the jar is the same size or bigger than the rest of the jar it should work.

Yea if its not bigger, or as big as the rest of the jar the cake isn't coming out. If the cake doesn't come out...Well your S.O.L.

either way, you are suppose to use WIDE mouth..
you should plan on for worst case scenario, having some pasteurized coir near by and a tub, because if your jars do somehow make it, and you have to break them up to remove them, then you still can use them to spawn to coir.
that leaves you with more research.
a) how do i prepare coir? b)how do i pasteurize coir? c) what is "ohmatic's montotub"? d) wtf am i going to use to dry all of this madness?
the search function will answer all of that.
just in case you are left with several cakes you are going to be breaking up to get out.

Hah, don't worry guys, I will be getting the normal 1/2 pt Ball canning jars.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8033242
Only mine have gold lids and the rim is the same size as the jar, so no problem getting cakes out! Cheaper too!
