North Eastern USA ID Request
    #8601251 - 07/06/08 04:08 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Cap; moist, slimey, 2-4 diameter, brown/tan gradient outwards.  As it matures, it curls upwards like a cup.

Gills; white, very soft

Stem; Soft, stringy, 1.5-3+ inches, white

Habitat; In mossy, moist grass, bordering treeline.  Tons of these mushrooms are in a long line.

Think it was said that this was an Amanita, found in same place beneath a giant pine that I did last time.  Just thought it was beautiful.

Cap; Tan, <1 inch diameter

Gills; Brownish, tan

Stem; really thin, fragile, 1-3+ inches

Habitat; in grass out all over the lawn.

Hmm?  First one is not an Amanita, look at the base.  I'd say Russula.

I agree with #2 and #3.

So the first one does have a Russula look compared to some other pictures I'm seeing online.  Very moist-looking and slick/slimey.

How does one go about finding out if an amanita is active? =X

The first one may be Megacollybia platyphylla, we get alot of them in the northeast.
Was there buried wood under the moss?

If it is a Russula
the gill spacing don't look right but they can be sub distant. Also you said the stipe is stringy, not so with Russula, stipe breaks almost like chalk.

Megacollybia platyphylla
has a (stringy stipe) and the gill spacing and attachment looks right as far as I can see.

And do the gills have serrated look to them?

Soul is deadnuts I believe.
