I would flash the TSOP or put in a modchip, install a larger hard drive, then install xbmc as your dashboard and media center. dvd2xbox to copy either games or movies to the hard drive, install some emulators from you favourite classic systems. Thats about all that I would do if you want to keep it basic, all that I do. Some people put lights and stuff in there, I do put a better fan, but thats it.

hmmmm...well, you pretty much have to have stuff for anything, if you have a memory card and the right game, you can flash the tsop and run any code you want, therefor unlocking the system, without a modchip. Go to xbox-scene.com and read the tutorials for xbox, they have everything you need to flash the tsop, I just bought a new xbox, so about to do it myself, for probably the 4th or 5th time. You could cut a window in teh dvd rom like some people do, but I personally wouldn't, i don't really care about looks, just what it can do.

Softmod it. You need a memory card and a copy of Splinter Cell, Mechassault or 007: Agent Under Fire (check video shops). There's hundreds of tutorials for doing this. It should be cheaper than using a mod chip and doesn't require you to open the case (which needs a Torx screwdriver)
Actually I wouldn't bother with a mod chip at all. If you open the case you can plug the hard drive into your computer and copy the softmod files over that way. Completely free (apart from the Torx driver) and reversible. There are tutorials for doing this as well.

I made the most ghetto usb device ever when I softmodded my xbox - I needed to get the files on a memory card so I spliced a usb connector to the controller and had to install some drivers and then it worked fine
I have xbmc on it, and it's all I ever use it for anyway, it's pretty nice
It's kinda a pain in the ass to find the shit to softmod it, but once you get over that part, its really easy to do

That's my experience too. It's definitely worth it for XBMC

Yup. I got it softmodded running UnleashX. Figured this would be a nice topic to get the new forum going. What are you guys running? Any game suggestions or places to download them?

XBMC FTW! Then set up Xlink on your PC; XBMC has built in support so you can get your online gaming fix for free. I used to play a lot of Halo 2 that way, it's also nice because the people on Xlink tend to be a bit more mature and tech-savy than the Xbox Live crowd.
Like any warez, usenet is best source for XISOs, but http://bt.xbox-sky.cc/ is good as far as torrents go.
I'm trying to remember some good recommendations.... Ninja Gaiden, Freedom Fighters, Def Jam Fight for New York, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Psychonauts, the Prince of Persia games, those were all good enough that I even bought them and they should keep you busy for a while.

So you like XBMC more than UnleashX? I've read a bit about XBMC, just had experience with unleash. I need to check usenet out, but I don't think my ISP offers newgroups. (Forgive me if I am thinking about two different things as I am not sure) I just got finished downloading Ninja Gaiden black. I've got a bunch of games in the past few days. Just finished loading up the GBA, N64 and SNES emulators with a bunch of games. Damn it brings back memories!

In my humble opinion, XBMC is worlds better than UnleashX. You can't even really compare them since XBMC offers so much more functionality and features. Not that there's anything wrong with UnleashX, props to the whole scene, XBMC just sets the bar really really high. If you're perfectly happy with your existing setup there's no need to go mucking things up, but sometime if you're bored get a current build of XBMC and take some time to explore all the features - I doubt you'll want to go back. It's the difference between a game console with some neat abilities, and a full-fledged media center PC which also happens to play Xbox games. Hell I was so enamored with it that for a while I was even releasing my own builds. IMHO it's up there with Firefox as a shining example of what open source can accomplish. I'm glad they're porting it to PC so it doesn't die with the Xbox.

Oh and most standard distributions of XBMC come with the Shroomery Milkdrop preset, so that's a plus.

It's under R, "Rovastar - The Shroomery". It comes stock with Winamp too.
Rovastar occasionally stops by the boards so say hi if you see him.

Yeah, I think i'll try loading XBMC. If anyone is interested in any ISO's for xbox, let me know. I'm going through and deleting the ones i've already copied onto the xbox or burned to a disc.
