This is the worst thing that could happen My storage HD took crap and now most importantly my pics are gone. And it just so happens that my backup DVDs are not in the case. Its like the computer gnomes are fucking with me or something.

its more of a physical problem with the drive, i think. it repeats spin-up constantly. I just need the drive to work 1 more time to get the data off of it then... in the garbage it goes

Then methinks it's time to break out the set of mini screwdrivers and allen wrenches and start fiddling around with shit you don't know what you're touching.
It's what I would do.

I feel your pain My brother's wife's sister has been storing family pics on her computer for years and had around 20,000 family pics from throughout her life stored on it. The silly goose never made any backups and now her puter took a total dump. She's going to have to pay around a grand from a data recovery place to retrieve her pics.

Sorry to hear about your dead drive. This suggestion won't help you now , but for the future, when you replace the drive, do whatever it takes to find the money to buy two and dedicate the second to backup-only use.
Backing up to CD/DVD isn't workable. It's expensive to throw disks away every time you make a new backup, and it's slow and cumbersome to sit there swapping optical disks. Tape drives are expensive. A dedicated disk of the same type is the cheapest and best way for a home user.
If you don't buy it now, you'll put it off and never will. Eventually this day will come again and you'll wish you had bought the drive. Data you don't backup is data you don't really want.

I've found that there are basically two types of computer users in the world... those that have lost data and do backups, and those that have not lost data and do not yet do backups.

That's very expensive - the last quote I got was $1500 to recover one drive. Very few home users can justify that.

This probably won't work, but I've been reading that sometimes a failed disk can be resurrected for a few minutes to a few hours by sticking it in a freezer overnight. Not sure why or if this will work, but you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Ive heard of the same thing. There are other 'techniques' like that to resurrect 'dead' drives. Ill hold on to the HD for a while and see what happens. It might work the next time i go to try it
