Re: Growing on compost?
    #85961 - 05/30/00 03:27 PM (23 years, 9 months ago)

I know that is kind of sacriledge, but the commercial, organic Mushroom Blend compost seems to be colonizing quite well. 5 full quarts of pasturized compost were inoculated with inoculated with one 2/3 full quart of grain spawn. The mycelium was fluffy and kind of slow to colonize the grain, but quickly turned to aggressive rhizomorphic growth in the compost. It has been 9 days, and the compost is almost completely colonized. The brand name is Permagreen. It is formulated very similarly to the compost that Stamets recommends in The Mushroom Cultivator. Unlike other brands of commercially available mushroom composts, this has never been used to grow mushrooms. It runs about $2 for 1.25 cubic feet (35 L.) This is very reasonable for small scale growing, but a bit steep for filling up a kiddie pool. If you want to go that big, why don't you use the method outlined in The Mushroom Cultivator. If you don't have it, I could probably look it up for you and outline it, but no one should be without that book.

The only permagreen I could find is a company in arvada CO called permagreen products. They are under the garden section of arvada's business site. They have no website or e-mail. If this is the right place, their phone number is 303-424-7291. If this sounds like the right company, somebody in colorado should give them a call so I don't have to foot a huge phone bill. Find out what national chains carry this stuff.

Keep us updated spacefarmer! Where did you find it?

Also, just did a search and found 4 bad reviews of this permagreen stuff. Not saying anything, just saying they were there.

I checked the bag, and the company is based in Arvada. I found it at the local Home Depot. I live in Colorado, so it might be more available here than in other states. They did not list any contact info. The compost experiments are still incomplete, so there is not yet enough info to make a whole-hearted recommendation. The preliminary spawn run seems good. Casing and fruiting success remains to be seen. I will keep you updated as events unfold.

Were the poor reviews you found written by mushroom growers? A quick search turned up a poor review for its use as a potting soil, but one really should not use compost for potting anyway.

spacefarmer:
How are you doing it outside? Seems a bit dry to me. A foaf is using mushroom compost too...forgot to read the label and doesnt know if its permagreen tho..does the bag say whats IN the compost? The one my foaf used had wheat-grass, fibrous peat, gypsum, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, cottonseed hulls. It was probably from arvada..(pretty close by) but im not sure.
oh yeah..do you water it evryday?
thanks!

The compost is inside in a 30 gallon perlite humidified terrarium. The compost was inoculated with the colonized rye grain and spread out in a large cat litter pan. It has been misted occasionally out of fear of it being a bit too dry, but the mistings look like they might be damaging the growing mycelium. The next step will probably be to transfer the colonized into a container or two that will take up a little less real estate in the terrarium and case it. If this were to be used outside, Ryche's outdoor growing tek would seem to make sense, or just case it at the same time it is inoculated and keep the casing moist. Outdoor growing will probably be the next experiment if this compost continues to work out.
The mix your foaf is using sounds even better than the Permagreen. Permagreen lists poultry and horse manures, wheat straw, cottonseed hulls, "forest products," and sphagnum peat. I guess the "forest products" is left to your imagination. I like to think that is ground up squirrels.
The compost is going to be cased tomorrow most likely. It will probably be a week before any production data is obtained provided the casing doesn't fall victim to the dreaded cobweb mold.

The reviews were found here at the shroomery, so I assume they were shroom growers. Gourmets that is of course!

I could outline the method from The Mushoom Cultivator if you would like. Sorry we got off your topic.

Sorry.
there was a really good tek posted by some british dude about 6 mos or so ago. Maybe learner, you who I'm thinking of? Anyway, sort through the compost postings after searching and you will find it.

Theres the steam humidifier method that has been reincarnated lately that originally came from Harris' book I believe.

Mycomountain is also making compost I believe, find him perhaps. I think he's using trash cans, but not sure.

Sorry if i didn't help, but I told you where I would look if I were looking.

I feel like I have kind of taken over this topic, but I would just like to post an update. The Permagreen brand mushroom compost was cased on thursday with a 3:1 peat moss and vermiculite mix balanced with gypsum and lime to a pH of 7. When it was again checked on saturday, the mycelium had already started growing through the casing layer. The spots where the mycelium had grown through were patched with fresh casing mix and light mistings were instituted twice daily. The next time the compost should probably be cased sooner. As it was, the compost was not cased until 12 days after inoculation because there was still a small patch of uncolonized compost. Casing sooner might have been better for the 90% of the mycelial mat that had colonized. Either way, the results are very encouraging.
