Magic Mushrooms Still Legal in Netherlands This Summer

THE HAGUE - 'Magic mushrooms' will not yet be banned in the coming months. The health ministry announced yesterday that it would no longer be possible to have the ban come into effect before the parliamentary summer recess.
After next week, the Lower House will not be meeting again until 2 September, when it is virtually certain to back the ban. The ban could not come into effect on the target date because 188 parliamentary questions have been raised on the proposed bill, according to the ministry. "It costs some time to answer all of this," a spokesman explained.
The ban is partly due to accidents suffered by hallucinating tourists in Amsterdam. Magic mushrooms are currently only banned in dried form, but the fresh products have the same hallucinogenic effects.

Too bad they didn't elaborate on why the Lower House will "almost certainly" support the ban. Sure seems like there's a lot of resistance for it from both political and cultural sources.

I am sure alcohol is "responsible" for far more damage than magic mushrooms ever have been in the Netherlands.

i think it should stay legal, but if they have to do anything they should just ban the shit for tourists and the problem is solved.
pretty sad tourists are ruining all the fun for the rest of the country. i think that's just a front though.

This is nothing new, small groups of uninformed people have a tendency to ruin it for everybody. Just look at the recent ban of Salvia in Florida, some fucking idiots post their reckless behavior on the internet and draw attention to themselves. Not to mention the unamed idiots on satellite radio that repeatedly used Salvia on air, made asses of themselves and followed it with quotes as "man, I can't believe this shit is legal".

Blaming ignorant people for the ban the government gave YOU is ignorant in itself. You support the government by condoning their reasons, when really their reasons are completely unethical.
If a group of gang members began carrying shovels and using them to beat people, the government should not gain the right to arrest you for digging a garden. This situation is no different.
If they want to actually make the situation safer, let them institute reasonable regulation, like age restricted sale.

That's because in the Lower House we have socialists, who are more puritanical that all the other religions put together, moderate christians who are opposed to anything that threatens normality, extreme christians, who are so backward that they refuse to give women equal status in the party, populists who hate teh eevil drugz0rz, one party devoted to big business that is struggling to keep their last couple of voters from defecting to the populists, and a small minority of greens and libertarians who don't matter in the grand scheme of things.
