Cantharellus appalachiensis (Shroomery 1st)
    #8596008 - 07/04/08 09:07 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Short story-

Today on a mad foray for the Yellow Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius), I found two other species of Chanterelles, Cantharellus appalachiensis and Cantharellus cinnabarinus.  We were so focused on the Yellows I didn't even get a habitat picture for the Appas.

Worse yet, I threw the Reds away because I wasn't paying attention.

Anyway, here they are:

Compare with Kuo's page, Cantharellus appalachiensis.  The second picture shows the classic form with the yellow-brown cap and the brown spot in the center.

tripsis, according to the literature they do not taste as good as Cantharellus cibarius.  I sauteed them and stored them in the frig so I don't know how they taste, yet.

I have some other foraying to do (look for Yellows) until Tuesday which is the first time I'll be able to try them.

Danny, yeah, I think they are pretty common east of the Mississippi.

Now I already TOLD you I like mystery!  Whatdya go an ruin it for?

Nice.  And Kuo says they fruit summer AND fall.  Big deal if they don't taste good.  They DO, however, smell GREAT--just like apricots, i.e. Yellows.
