Haha, cool dude....
Me and my friends would go to Home depot everyonce in a while and grab a few things to make our own homemade peices. We have made a skull bong, a gas mask, and converted a bong to hooka style...
I had an idea for you to try with what you made there, the very end of the "down tube" screw in a little bolt or find a way to cap off the end, then make little holes or slits in the side of the "down tube", should work like a ghetto perforated downstem....If not, oh well worth a try that tube is cheap....

What would be the benefit of this? More bubbles/greater filtration?

Yup pretty much...The water doesn't filter much stuff out of the smoke anyways, cools the hit, pulls out some of the oils and what not from the lighter fuel, and catches a few nasty things from the smoke......But the concept of having many tiny holes instead of the traditional is that there is more surface area for the smoke to come in contact with the water....When the smoke passes through the water it is within a "bubble", the only smoke that is getting cooled or cleaned is the smoke that is in contact with the water in other words the smoke around the outside of that bubble. Increase the amount of "bubbles" you have and by theory you have more filtration and should have a much smoother hit....
If you ever get the chance to hit a PHX you will understand what i mean by smooth....

Here's a double-bubbler that I made for my work when I used to work at a Jiffy Lube. It ripped!!
Sorry the pictures suck, they're pictures of pictures on my phone. Too lazy to send them and what not.
