Is 13 PSI enough?
    #8594160 - 07/04/08 06:36 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

This is the maximum my pressure cooker goes up too, last time my bags got contaminated, how long should i cook for at this pressure?

Also how much water do you think i should use for 1.5kg of rye grain? used 1.3 litres last time. Is this enough or too much?

That depends on how much substrate is in the bags and how many bags you have crammed in the PC. The larger the substrate and the more cramped the bags are, the longer you will need to PC for the steam to fully penetrate and sterilize the substrate.

My pressure cooker only goes up to 13psi. Just cook for longer than the recommended time. I've had no issues with it so far.

Well i was doing 1.5kg bags for 2.5 hours, i pressure cooked with 1.3litres of water inside like my tek said but now im looking at teks that say i should've soaked my grain for 24hours instead, would this be better?

Yes. Your bags probably got contaminated becasue you failed to sterilise the bacterial endospores present in the grains. By soaking for 12 - 24 hours you are hatching those endospores, making them vulnerable to the sterilisation process and resulting in effective sterilisation.

Thanks very much for the information. should i add any more water after soaking for humidity or is the amount soaked quite enough?

Add water to the grain? No, soak, then simmer on low for around 25 minutes (optional), then drain well and then bag. You don't want excess water to be pooling in the bags.
