Can anyone ID this?
    #859402 - 09/02/02 06:37 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I put the mushrooms on my scanner, so the photos are not very good. They bruse tan/brown, the gills are not attached to the stem. The photo of the print looks yellow but it does not have any yellow, it is grayish-purple. The stems are tanish at the bottom and white at the top, hollow. The gills are brown. They were growing in dirt, southwest Mo. There are a lot of oak trees and a few willows. The caps were allmost sticky when I picked them but dried soon and feel silky now. The caps are from an inch to 4 inches, the tallest one I?ve seen was 4-5 inches tall. I thank you for any help you can give.

the only active mushroom this could possibly be is a cubensis but if it stained tan/brown it rules that out so sorry. Not Active

Not active, that's OK. Is it safe to eat, like in gravy or something? I would like to know what it is, active or not. Thanks for helping.

Good description and photos. They help a lot.

The best match I can find is Psathyrella velutina. The photos don't show this detail, but this species usually has droplets of water on the edges of the gills. Also, the caps of this species are often almost shaggy with fibrils. Your photos make the caps distictly fibrillose, but I can't tell how much. Here's a photo which resembles your specimens somewhat. Does this look like a match to you?

Happy mushrooming!

I don't think thats it (I could be wrong). The gills are brown and do not get any darker as the spores drop (odd, as the spore print is darker than the gills). All so the gills are wavy, not strait. It did have very small water droplets on the gills. The cap starts out more of a golden color and darkens to a brown with age (starting at the top center). The flesh between the gills and the outer brown skin is white. It has the smell of a musty basement. The brusing I may be wrong on, I have never before tryed to bruse a mushroom. It may be that the color is from compresing the cells causing coloration. There is, without a dought, purple in the spores. Are there any questions that any of you could ask to help me ID this? And thanks again!

Does this photo look closer? It's still the same species. When I look for photos of these it is notable how variable the photos look.

I know a velvety psathrella when I see one, and those sir are definitely Psathrella velutina. They are the mushrooms that I use to tell a good area or to signal that weilii season is about to take off strong. I don't know why but every singal weilii patch I have wilii have some velvets growing somewhere near if not in the patch.

LK,
