"Mine-shaft Canary" Contamination warning?
    #8589465 - 07/02/08 09:58 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

So ... I just got baked (been sober awhile) and was in my growroom and had a brainwave of sorts. Just thinkin here but .... what about actually setting up a jar or something, sterilized along with everything else at the time, to act as an early waring system for contams? Like the mine canaries of yesteryear, see one drop to the floor and you know you've got trouble. You could set them in series with the operation. One during inoculation, one in the colonization area, and one in the FC. I mean, if you make the conditions optimal for even the slightest contamination to form, you could catch it early, and maybe stop it. If not at least identify which part of your process is dirty. I don't know, like I said, I'm fukn stoned  :gethigh: . Just got to trippin in my growroom with my first run colonizing in front of my very eyes. Got to thinkin bout them little birds warning the miners of CO2 and how that related to my little "mineshaft". Sooo.....

Sounds good to me other than an uncolonized cake in the fruiting chamber, that sounds like what is gonna cause your grow to fail.

I had a single brf jar that had been sitting with tape on it for about a month since i made it.  Knocked it up last week and its doing great now.

So this might help you identify where in the steps you are having problems.

What if you made the "canary" something really easy for a contam to colonize. That way you might be able to see it way ahead of time. And then take steps to correct it in the next run, or even separate the affected cycle from the area to a "dirty" zone.

You would have to have your cake or w.e it is open. An open jar is no longer steril. It will contam no doubt.

thats the point. But not sterile pf-cakes. Agar, or sugarwater or something contams would love to colonize. to act as an EARLY warning system. Just watch the "canary" jar very closely.

Doesn't make sense IMO. Spores don't actively seek out places to germinate. If spores get into something they get into it. I don't think you're doing any good by having something left out to contam on purpose.

I think he gets pesticide sprayers and makes a LC with them. Then he just goes all over the place spraying random shit. Kind of a strange aspect of the hobby if you ask me, LOL.
