To crumble cakes or not when casing??
    #8589498 -

Doing a simple casing with half pints BRF cakes. Ive seen both ways, what are the pros/cons of doing each?

Also how do you determine how many cakes to crumble for casing? I know this is size of the casing dependent but give me a size to cakes to crumble ratio for an example, thanks.

Take enough cakes fill a 3-4 inch deep layer in a tub (doesn't matter the size of the tub).  Use a fork- level out the surface of the crumbles.  Top off with a casing at about 1/2-1 inch and level again.  Be sure to spray everything down fairly well (don't soak to the point of standing water though).  Give it time.  Watch growth. Harvest.

Many experienced growers will tell you it's not worth the time to crumble and case cakes. However, they are great for spawning to bulk. I've had great results from spawning cakes to coir.

well, really it doesn't matter how many cakes you use, it'll still colonize the spawn if you have fully colonized grain or brf cakes.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't crumble the cakes, never heard of it done any other way... makes sense to crumble because you get a wider area covered.

usually I take a regular baking tray and use 3 4oz or 2 half pint cakes.

not a good pic to get a size ratio, something like this tho

I dont see why anyone would crumble a cake unless you're spawning it to another substrate.

Doesn't it make sense to have a solid 3" layer of mycelium?  My vote is for whole cakes.  I have never once crumbled a cake unless it was to spawn to another substrate.  I guess I feel like why disturb the cake and break it all apart, its already one solid healthy mycelium network.  LEAVE it whole!  Just my .02

To each their own.  Good luck!

Well, not crumbling them could take a bit longer to colonize before pins since there's going to be those empty patches in between cakes. I think it's arguable whether they will have more/less yield, because I've seen pictures, and not crubling them is going to give you a hell of a high yield, but only/mainly on the casing layer on top of the cakes, while crumbling them gives you a pretty decent yield, but all around. You're also going to get better flushes with crumbled cases. Oh yes and non-crumbled casing can lead to uneven pinset much more often.

I basically see no reason why you wouldn't want to crumble them unless you're dealing with things can't be shaken during inoculation such as BRF.

I've never had a whole cake take longer to pin, if anything, it's faster.  The myc isnt looking to "colonize" the vermiculite.  It's seeking out food essentially, growing through the verm.  Yield IMO is better with casing, and whole cakes have always worked better for me.  It may be one of those use-what-you-learned and what works best kinda things.  Better flushes with crumbled cakes? I again disagree with mostly everything you said!  Heh.  Stay tuned to my journal to see whole cakes cased.

After further thought..  I think I will case 8 crumbled cakes along next to one that is 8 whole cakes and we will see what happens!   Check my journal within the next week.
