Don Juan
    #858597 - 09/02/02 11:02 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Ive read most of Carlos Castaneda's books about Don Juan. When I saw the book club catagory I expected to see much conversation about them. Has anyone read them? If you have Id like to talk about them.

I read A Separate Reality twice. Very good book. Do a search for threads in this forum, there's probably a few.

Just a warning though: whenever somebody on the Shroomery mentions Carlos Castenada, Alex123 makes a post about how Castenada is a terrible worthless liar. Just warning ya.

Thanks for the warning, I think I know Castenedas writing well enough to do him justice though. So why did you start with a seprate reality? You should read the others, especially the teachings. They are all quite helpfull. Thanks again

I was at my friend's house one time and I picked up the book off his shelf. He said "I want you to take that book home and read it RIGHT NOW!" So I did. I intend to read the others.

I have read all but the last book, which was about teaching certain bodily movements. Be aware that the books are fictional, and that I have it on excellent authority that there never was a historical Don Juan Matus. I discovered this back in 1974, when my professor of parapsychology, Dr. Bob Brier (whom you may have seen making the first Egyptian mummy in 2000 years on TLC) returned from the yearly meeting of occultists at Harry Houdini's grave, Halloween 1974, and Casteneda was there.

If one reads all of the books with a background in occultism, one can find elements deriving from C.W. Leadbeater's little book 'The Astral Plane,' some info from the 1970 18 volume set 'Man, Myth and Magic,' some knowledge about Mescalito from Native American lore, a hint of Indian Yoga re: the Manipura Chakra (i.e., the "gap"), and many other adaptations. No one I have known has ever described the "little smoke" with reference to a smokable mushroom mixture that causes a 'cold' throat sensation.

Later books drive home a particularly condescending and scathing attack on Christian mystical experience, smugly reduced to a phenomenon called "The Mold of Man." Eternal Life of one's "spark" that is consumed by a deity in the form of a cosmic eagle, draws on the Gnostic notion of 'sparks of awareness,' conjoined with Toltec symbolism. Casteneda wove many elements and many traditions into brilliant stories. I also believed this was a genuine shamanic path back in '72, as did many of my contemporaries. People went to Oaxaca in search of Don Juan in the early 70's. Suckers.

The existence of Don Juan Matis is inconsequential, What is important of Don Carlos' books is what it teaches about controlling yourself, controlling psychedelic drugs, and living life as a warrior. The teachings are an extraordinarily useful tool.

I don't like being deceived, but I'll give you this: the books presented an opportunity to realize that one could step outside of one's ordinary reality into non-ordinary realities. I took myself out to trip in the deserts of Arizona and Utah in order to realize such an option. Amid ground-hugging mists and coyote howls, I learned things - not the same things as the books - but they motivated me to look.

I still have to work out how much of this I believe is Carlos and how much is from others, but I really dont see a need to pursue finding a source. I have read all of his books up to the art of dreaming. They have changed my life drasticly.

I have just now discovered Castaneda.  I am looking forward to reading them.  But alas the local library starts with the 3rd or 4th book so I have to order the first couple.  I will post again when I do finally read some.   Thanks to Swami for selling me Journey to Ixtlan.

I never said he's worthless, if you like people making shit up and trying to pass it off as genuine then it will have some worth to you.

However, there is no doubt whatsoever he is a conman and a liar.
