anyone flatten there shrooms when drying?

After dessicating, mushrooms seem a little brittle and crumbly for my liking. Lately during the pre drying, when most of the water's gone but there still a bit flexable, i've been flattening them. this way, after dessicating, there a bit stiffer and more compact. When i was a kid, we used to collect wildflowers and press thm between napkins, with 1'x1' plywood peices locked with wing nuts. I may do this with some semi-dry mushrooms, then dessicate

Hey there,
I've never tried that, but it seems like a really good idea  :laugh:
I'm definatley going to give that a try with my next harvest, as I agree, they are pretty brittle / fragile as they are normally dried. I bet it looks cool too!

Sounds like a start of a new trend, Flat Shroomies. Let us know how they turn out. My cat's harvest isn't till a couple of weeks, but I think I'll try to if everything works out for you. Let us know.

It?s been a while since my mom tought me to press flowers back when i was on the farm. From the best of my recolection, it was 1/2" plywood, with several layers of cardboard, napkin, flowers, napkins, cardboard, ect... i only drew one layer, but there were many. When we got lazy we just pressed them in a heavy book with the napkins. I used to find flowers sometimes in books i forgot about... so this isn?t ideal. anyhoo, the mushrooms have to be semi-dry, say, the water makeup of flowers or about. i?ll do this if i remember and post results.

I've always flattened them. Never dried them unflattened once...

I think next i will be using 3' pvc pipe to press them into hockey pucks. Just fill er up, screw a cap on one end, put a 3" dowell section in, screw the other cap on and you have an adjustable screw press, hocky puck makin machine. Maybe add some guar-gum (that shit they put in popsicles, and other stuff) to make sure they stay firmly together. could even put some dessicant in the pvc somehow.
