Anyone Know what these are? PICS
    #858170 - 09/02/02 02:26 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

My friend found these in his backyard, they look like they have veils that already broke and shrunk up. Are they active?

Just thought I would Post some pics of my jars also

The photos are pretty clear, good job. A spore print would be really helpful.

I think Anno hit the nail on the head - those look like Lepiotas to me. In addition to a spore print, cut one in half vertically, bruise the inside of the stem with your knife blade, and let us know if it bruises and what color.

DANGER! Several species of small Lepiota, similar to your specimens, are deadly poisonous. DO NOT EAT! The poisonous small Lepiotas contain the same toxins as the deadly Amanita mushrooms, and they are responsible for several fatalities. The toxins destroy the liver, and an emergency liver transplant is often the only effective treatment.

Happy mushrooming!

It doesnt bruise much, kind of a litish brown. And the sporeprints are clearish to white. I will take more spore prints w/ maturer ones and try bruising the stem with more fresh ones.

Going with what you've said so far they resemble Lepiota cristata. There are actually several species which are very similar to this which we need to do microscopic examination of the spores to differentiate between. L. cristata sometimes has a distinctive odor. Do these specimens?

They dont stink much, are any lepiotas hallucigenic? I am thinking no.

A fleshy fungi similar in macro-characters to the Agarics but with a white or pale spore print and spores typically pseudoamyloid. Some members are good eating while others are poisonous.

that is exactly what the sporeprints are, white and very pale. I will try and get into the science lab at school to take pics of the spore prints under a microscope, but i might not have any luck.

It could be deadly Lepiota helveola. If I remeber it right it resembles L. cristata very much except for the odor. Cristata has a very unpleasant odor.
