I've been having trouble using soulseek. My room-mate and I are sharing a DSL connection behind a wireless router, and i was wondering if there was any way to tweak soulseeks options to adjust to this? (i.e. change port #?)
The problem is that sometimes i don't even return search results, so i have i terrible time of downloading music. I don't have trouble downloading torrents, but the P2P (person to person?) connection sux.

Are you both trying to use Soulseek, or just one of you? I'll assume both for now. First things first, check online if your router supports UPnP. If it does, find out if it needs to be enabled and how. Once UPnP is on in your router, ensure it's enabled in Soulseek. Apparently there's some kind of UPnP manager in general options but I've never used it. Once you have UPnP enabled in both the software and the router, it should be a simple matter of assigning different, non-overlapping ports in Soulseek on any computer that wants to use it. You can pick almost any port numbers but to ensure there are no conflicts I'd recommend using ones between 49152 and 65535.
If you don't have UPnP support in your router, it's probably time to upgrade, but you can still make it work. First you'll need to configure Soulseek so it has different, non-overlapping ports or port ranges on both computers. Remember the ports or port ranges which you set up on both computers.
Next you should configure any computers running Soulseek so they have static IP addresses. Open a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and note the settings. Then go to the settings page for your network connection (look here if you need help) and fill in the IP, subnet, gateway, etc. with the values from ipconfig. Remember the IP especially.
Finally you need to connect to your router's management interface and forward the ports to the appropriate computers. Often you can bring up the management page by taking the 'gateway' address you got from ipconfig, and loading it in your web browser (eg. http://192.168.0.1). Check your manual if that doesn't work. Next you need to look for 'NAT' or 'Port Forwarding' options. You will want to set it up so that the proper port ranges are forwarded to the proper computers. So if your first PC is 192.168.0.2 and you set its copy of Soulseek to use ports 1337 - 1339, in the router you need to set it up so remote ports 1337 - 1339 get forwarded to 192.168.0.2. Eg. in my router it would look like this but your mileage may vary.

Once you're done with that start up Soulseek and give it a try. If it's not working, you screwed up because my instructions are impeccable! Good luck.
