New Delhi, June 28: India is one of the largest producers of fashion drugs and new trends in drug trafficking have revealed that India is being used as transit route for Afghan heroin from Pakistan to China.
Last year, eight such cases of India being used as a transit point were witnessed when narcotics officials seized the consignment and made arrests. Interestingly, it were the South Asian women who were being used to do these operations.
"Chemicals used in drugs like methamphetamine are easily available in Indian but as compared to this, the consumption levels here are not alarming, though they cannot be overlooked," Mr Rajiv Walia of United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said, adding that recent seizures of ATS drugs have shown a Chinese connection. India is also the largest producer of psuedoephederine and ephedrine in the region.
Some reports have also indicated that international drug trafficking syndicates, mostly organised gangs from West African countries, have been using India as a major transit country for Europe-bound drug consignments and also as a destination country.
The latest World Drug Report has shown that India and Nepal are important producers of cannabis herb (hashish) in South Asia. Meanwhile, Asia has witnessed a rise in the number of opiates users to 16.5 million people in 2006-07. Out of these 16.5 million persons, 12 million or 0.3 percent of the population use heroin.
The number of cocaine users in the region has also increased to 16 million, raising the prevalence rate from 0.34 percent to 0.37 percent at the global level.
India has the largest opiate market in the sub-region with an estimated opiate using population of around 3 million.
The report states that more than half of the world’s opiate using population live in Asia (9.3 million). The highest levels of use are found along the main drug trafficking routes out of Afghanistan.
Figures show that Asia’s share in global heroin use is smaller — 6.1 million people or 51 per cent of the world total. Also, India has seized one of the highest quantity of drugs in the region recently. In 2006, agencies seized 157,710 kg of cannabis, 2,826 kilogram of opium and 1,218 kg of heroin.

350 or so thousand pounds. 175 tons.

If you cannot throw it at least you can always drink out of it. - Ernest Hemingway If it is life that you feel you are missing I can tell you where to find it. In the law courts, in business, in government. There is nothing occurring in the streets. Nothing but a dumbshow composed of the helpless and the impotent. -Cormac MacCarthy He who learns must suffer.
