Black and Decker Vegetable Steamer Tech!! PF Style
    #8575077 - 06/28/08 05:53 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I have been asked if these type of vegetable steamers would work for sterilizing brf/verm cakes.
I wish mine would hold more cakes

I have always assumed that they would work but I have never taken to  the time nor have I seen a post where someone has used one. I had a little free time today so i put a few cakes together. I used a basic brf/verm cake recipe. Any recipe will work but the only important thing is to use distilled water. you can only use distilled water when making brf/verm cakes. All other types of water will kill the mushroom mycelium. It has to be this brand also.

Here is something a lot of people screw up on. Its the packing of substrate into the jar. I usually fill the jar to the top without packing it. Then I hit the bottom of the jar a few times and it will compress to the correct density and allow room for the verm layer.

I used a typical verm layer with an added layer of tyvek along with the metal lid. Straight tyvek allows too much moisture loss and the cake will dry out and stall.

Fill the steamer with water, it is actually better to use distilled in here but any will work.
I think its hot

Calibrate the thermometer for the test run

Put the jars in and fire it up

Looky here, 212, perfect. The cool thing about the vegetable steamer is that water will not splash up and ruin your cakes.

I wish I would have bought a bigger steamer now.

Why would you need to use distilled water to make these cakes? And why in the world would you need to use a specific BRAND of distilled water???

I thought you were off your nut. So I guess you are not really suggesting people pack their jars down by slamming them down on the table, either... :crazy2:

It does work, it held 212 degrees for over an hour. It works just as good as simmering the cakes in a pot for an hour.

Now for the why would anyone use a pc question??? You still have a lot to learn

i guess our difference in thinking on this is the definition of "works". if this works, and it's certainly easier than boiling in a pot, which i've also heard some say doesn't work very well. then the only advantage to a PC would be size. i mean, if this works and by works i mean kills all contaims then that means it works as good as a pc. if it doesn't kill all, meaning it doesn't work as good as a pc, then that means it doesn't work for this purpose.  personally, i hope it does work, cheaper and easier that's for sure. although slower. got my fingers crossed for ya

okay, i follow you now. The pc gets hotter, shorter cook times, thorough cooking. The pc is always the best bet. This works good in lets say a dorm room and it much safer than using a hot plate.

ok, gotcha. it's encouraging to know. so many of us are not interested in huge grows. and often the same experienced growers that insist that you have to use a PC no matter what and that you should get the biggest one money can buy, because it's so much faster and easier than using a small one, are the same ones that scream about how this is a hobby of patience. and it certainly is.
since this performs the job of 100% sterilization as well as a PC, what's a little extra time when you have to stare at fully colonized jars for a week before birthing them?
if that is the model i think it is, there is a 75 min timer. i assumed you set it for the max?

i set it for the max (75) but I turned it back to 75 after it heated up to 212. AS for the sterilization differences between a pc and boiling brf cakes I would say that boiling/steaming is 99% and pc'ing is 99.999% Pc is always better but I do not remember ever having contams due to lack of sterilization when doing cakes with a regular pot but this is 10 years ago.

This is the one I have its bout 30$ and will only fit 4 jars. its almost big enough to layer them but not quite.

This one is bigger, looks like you might be able to get 2 layers or none

This is the no joke real deal 12 1/2 pints at a time cooker.
Perfect for the dorm room.

Cool thing about these is that there will be no smoke

B&D double on @ amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-HS2776-Double-Decker-Flavor-Scenter/dp/B0009AFW0Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1214704810&sr=1-2

triples brand? @ walmart
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9222982
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9222966

just a matter of maker sure you can fit 4 in each tray. someone might have to make a trip tomorrow.

this would work with bags, syringes, etc also i'd assume. is there anything that requires pressure? would you want your jar lids a little looser than you would if using a PC?  thanks

So you're saying that you have to have special water and verm for this "steamer tek" to work? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. You're kidding right?
