Coca Growers In Bolivia Cut Ties With USAID June 27, 2008 - gantdaily.com
La Paz, Bolivia (AHN) - Coca growers in Bolivia's Chapare province on Thursday stopped dealing with the U.S. Agency for International Aid and canceled its projects and programs to eradicate and reduce farming of the cocaine plant.
Rimer Agreda, the mayor of Sinahota, a town in the central Bolivian province, told CNN Friday that personnel of the USAID left the region amid allegations it was supporting groups opposed to Bolivian President Evo Morales.
Asterio Romero, a congressman from the ruling party Movement for Socialism, said USAID officials and staff were asked to leave immediately.
The U.S. Embassy in La Paz did not issue a comment.
Morales lauded the decision of the coca growers. Coca growers unions in Chapare plan to seek funding from Venezuela and the European Union, according to the Andean Information Network.
The unions claim that the USAID-funded coca eradication projects in the region failed to improve poor farmers' lives over the past 20 years.

I hope the whole thing works out alright, but the issue is amazingly complicated. My girlfriend did a report on this thing and is from Cochabamba. The coca has many legtimate uses as well as ancient cultural uses (its kind of like an equivalent to coffee) but apparently Morales is trying to make Bolivia a socialist country, this fares well with the poorer indegenous population but does not fare well with residents of la paz, and the people who are at risk to have their wealth "redistributed". It must be complicated running a country.
