i have always said the best cacti are the best cared for. my buddy ate 12 feet of etiolated and physically damaged by lack of care and got nothing. mind you it was thin but 12 ft should do it for anybody. not a thing maybe equivalent to a redbull. point proven dont hurt your cacti.

misidentification of cacti possibly?

Lol he musta been one hungry, hungry cactus eater. We all know what he means tho.
I think durban would know a tricho when he sees one. I think that etoliation would be the reason it produced no mescaline. Unless it was etoliation caused by no water, high sunlight.
This is my theory (based on nothing except my affinity with nature ) on how to produce more mescaline:
For a cacti to trigger the production of large amounts of alkaloids it needs a mixture of good health and bad. It will need to be triggered into making the alkaloids and then it will need the resources to produce them with.
It will extremely poor, well draining soil. Start off by getting your cacti to your desired size by babying it with rich soil etc until that size is achieved and you have one very healthy, happy cacti.
Take it out of that pot and hack its fibrous roots back a bit and get rid of most of the soil - allow to callus. Next, re-pot it into the arid waste-land pot. Let the roots grow back by babying it again by watering it with nutrients etc. Hold off with the nutrients (just water) until you are satisfied it has no more food to eat.
Now to the torture chamber, a glass/green house that reaches excessive temperatures and has an almost endless supply of sun. Stress the cacti out until it looks like utter shit. Then baby it back to health, repeat and repeat to whatever extent you wish.
The reason i believe that stressing out cacti and expecting them to produce heaps of mescaline doesnt work (that well) is it is not natural, at all for the cacti. It triggers the production of alkaloids fine, but they are eaten before they are given the chance to produce them.
When they get wickedly stressed they trigger two things, conservation and protection. They can conserve their resources great, but the production of alkaloids takes water, nutrients and energy, which the plant is not getting. Breaking the stressing with a cycle of depredation then feeding/repairing will actually allow the cacti to produce the alkaloids desired.
Kinda short, but you know what i mean.

Why do cacti produce more alkaloids when they are stressed in the first place? Protection from what?

Hippies, most flora and fauna evolved with anti-hippie mechanisms.
What do you think man? I cant believe people need to be told why plants use alkaloids..
If an animal eats a plant that has enough alkaloids to trip it out, that animal is a lot less likely to eat that plant again. And in the name of Allah, please.. Do not ask why - just watch some Animal Planet.
Also alkaloids can taste absolutely horrible, mescaline for eg. And they are also deadly to some animals and invertebrates.
Look at it this way: A goat given a San Pedro (spines reomved) and a cabbage, what do you think the goat will be more likely to eat?
Its survival of the fittest.

I dont know anything about alkaloid content of cacti, but in my experience, all of the plants that I care for the most and give the most attention to grow faster, thicker, and flower more.

well it was only about a inch in diameter with some sections that thickened do to changing of seasons. they are all clones from a known mother. my friend felt that his south facing sliding door would be plenty of light. i warned him but hes a little hard headed. there were 3 plants each about 4 ft. largest probably 5ft. the skin was green but you could tell they were begging to be outside. brew tasted nasty but nothing what you would expect if these were full size plants. he did say he had a hard time sleeping that night but that was it. this same cactus grown outside would have made him dissolve in fractals with 1/4 the amount. the lesson here hard grow your cacti in full sun. to all you window growers out there good luck! also more evidence stress does not play a factor. UV is the most important part of good production in my mind others may say different but this is my experience.

Bumping this thread made 0 sense. Old threads should not be bumped unless you have something new to add. Most of the time its best to start new threads for questions because Amberica will eat your ass otherwise.
