So can lightning strike the power grid outside my house (or inside), and cause my computer to blow up while im on it, or is that a myth?

Sure.  Well, maybe not 'blow up' but lightning can fry a computer.  Lightning can fry just about anything.

When I used to work as a computer repairman I saw lots of internal PCI modems with scorch marks.

I've always been facinated with lightning.  One of these days my facination will get me killed.

This was one of the last photos I took of an approaching storm.  I was standing in a big empty lot with my camera on a metal tripod shooting pics as the storm rolled in.  This bolt was a little close for comfort so I packed up and headed in at this point (it gets a little hairy when the lightning and thunder are nearly simultaneous!).

Here is an earlier image from the same storm while it was still a little way off.  The streak to the left is a passing aircraft.

Yes, lightning can be dangerous....but GODDAMN is it beautiful!!

how do you get the pics of lightning?  Do you set your shutter to constantly shoot as you hold the button, or do you have, literally, lightning fast fingers.

those are some badass pics, especially the first

You just hold the shutter open when you think there's going to be some lightning.

still, if he held it open longer than a second or two, there would be less definition in the clouds, as their movement would blur them

Yeah, time exposures are the key to lightning photography.  When there is a good electrical storm I just set the camera on a tripod, open the shutter, and wait for some lightning.

The second picture above was obviously a longer exposure then the first since you can see how much brighter the lights of the apartment buildings are burned in.  It was probably somewhere between 30 seconds and a minute.

The first one was a shorter exposure but I cut it off after capturing a nice (and frightening) bolt of lightning.  It started raining on me as I was packing up and running out of the field after taking that shot.

Remember, these pics were taken at night during a storm.  The only times the clouds are illuminated are from the flashes of lightning.  The rest of the time the sky is black.

Here is an example of exposures taken without a tripod.  Notice how the city lights are blurry from the handheld camera moving around in these 30 second exposures, but the lightning and clouds are still nicely defined from the lightning flashes.

Your pictures are much better for scenery....!

There was a storm here a few weeks ago, and I grabbed my camera and went into a room that faced "the cloud"....
And WoW, was there some KiKASS LIGHTNING - like every 3-4 seconds, a lot of times in the same spot....
I aimed my camera, and  just literally took randomly clicked shots while the lightning was going - only catching maybe 1 lightning out of every 10-15 shots....
I NEED to figure out how to leave the shutter open, soon....

This is the only picture that got "Photoshopped", just to clip them together so you can see the one ominous round cloud....

The rest are in order of how I snapped them over the next 30 minutes, until my arms got tired of holding the camera up....
Then I just sat there in awe for the ext hour or so....

If I had just seen "War of the Worlds" that night, I would have been freaking out after seeing all of this.....!?
Never seen a cloud sit still for so long, and never so much freakin lightning, all in such a small area....
Pretty cool....!

Lightning is fun to photograph.  Unfortunately the last T-storm Reno saw was dry fire lightning out in the east (like 40 miles east) and up in the mountains.  I haven't seen any lightning in the valley yet this year.
