White Fuzz(mycelium??) on the stem.
    #8566147 - 06/26/08 10:47 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

My first born is growing horizontally over some perlite. It came out of the bottom and is too heavy to go up anymore.  The base is fairly small.  Anyways, there is white fuzz on about 3 inches of the stem that is right over the perlite.  I think this is just from too much humidity.  Will it hurt my baby??  More importantly will it hurt SWIM?

its perfectly normal, due to high humidity/moisture, its near the perlite that why this is happening most likely, much it, its good, try to reduce your moisture though, atleast list the cake away from the perlite, build a structure from wire mesh to set your cakes on 1" above the perlite

When growing cubes, remember this
"if its WHITE, its all RIGHT"

And when the color of possible contam/whatever is OTHER than white
"if in doubt, toss it out"

These fuzz on the stems threads occur at least twice a week, and invariably someone will say it's from too much humidity, which is wrong.  Fuzz on the stems is normal, and there is no such thing as too much humidity.  100% humidity would be great if you could achieve it.

I know.  I've seen at least a hundred threads where someone says that, and then that wrong answer gets repeated, and repeated, and repeated.  I've corrected the record on most, but sometimes I just don't have the energy to type it over and over again.  Mushrooms are 100% composed of mycelium, and it's no surprise that various types of mycelium would be present in/on the fruits.
