I'd like to prototype a magnetic crop circle generator - Any ideas?

I posted this here, because even though it is for an art project, the questions are more technical in nature...Please move the thread if this is in the wrong place.
I had the thought the other day while reading a book on crop circles, that they would make great psychedelic wall art. What would be even cooler would be to have the ability to program in sequences of your favorite designs and have them morph from one design to the next.
So I got to thinking about it and the idea I'm playing with would be a round base with a fake grass of some kind. The tips of the "grass" or "crops" would be the magnetic part. If you want the grass to stand up, you have to have the magnets at the base reversed in polarity, so they are pushing away from each other. When you want the grass to be "down" so that it creates the crop circle, you would have to create a magnetic motion that would make the grass tips fall over and not just collapse (though I guess that would be fine too, but it would be great to replicate the way the crop circles really look from above...
So the magnetic base would have to be computer controlled and have the programs to switch the images.
Anyone have any idea on how this could be done?

What kind of scale are you talking about here?

You have it backwards. Psychedelic art is one of the things that inspire the people who make crop circles.

Wall Art, y'know. Something on your wall, like 10 inches in diameter...
Yes, if you go to a site called circlemakers.com or .org...there is a lot of neat info by some of the artists.
OKay so back on topic please, any techy people can help me out?

How many pieces of grass do you want?
If you are going to dynamically change the magnetic field that each blade feels, then you are going to need a separate coil under each piece. Simply apply current or change the direction of the current and your in business.
Now how to construct and control hundreds of coils positioned under hundreds of pieces of metallic 'grass' would be a big job.
I cant think of an easier way.

A rough idea, can you make specific formations of static electric fields....? Then you could use thin weak horse hair or something similar as the blades of grass/plant stalks.... And the static would make the inverse of the shape by making the blades stand up....
I have a feeling that the static would end up spreading after a few images, and everything would just end up standing up - unless you can somehow kill the charge....
Yeah, pretty rough idea....
