Please correct my if I am wrong (I have never built a HEPA blower because I do not need one). But if I would build one I would test it in the following empirical manner (I like to test empirical because the only thing I am interested in is if it works - I am not interested in the math or graphs):
Question 1: is the air stream strong enough to keep contaminants out?
Answer: if a stick of incense is lit nearby the HEPA blower and no smoke comes near the working space it is probably OK
Question 2: is my working space really sterile?
Answer: sterilize enough agar plates to cover the working surface. Place them all in front of the blower (or in it if it is a top-down thing). Remove the lids for a couple of minutes and replace them.
If no dish contaminates in two weeks your HEPA is OK. Now find somebody who is outdated enough that (s)he thinks (s)he needs such a device and sell it.
For tests like these it is useful to choose for an agar recipe which results in a medium which is as contaminant-sensitive (nutrietive) and transparent as possible, so results can be seen immediately. Glucose/marmite agar is very good.

Sure, this test would be very good.
The mathematics and the charts are used so you can put together a working hood without having to test it and possibly find out that you bought the wrong blower....

Most muhrooms can?t be grown using the PF tek...
Here is a list of things you can do without a flowhood or pressure canner.
- make agar media - germinate spores - make spawn - inoculate bulk substrate
(the techniques are explained in detail in vol I&II of the manuals at www.mycomasters.com)
But you are right of course. The PF TEK doesn't need agar media, spawn or bulksubstrate because PF SUbstrate is all those things in one. It is a pity that only a few mushrooms can be cultivated this way (but OTOH I am glad that that is the case, because it is also a good protection against cultivating the wrong mushroom by an unexperienced cultivator).

Hardly a bulksubstrate...
Very good for beginners and good for moderate amounts of P. cubensis mushrooms, but anything more than that...just forget it.
