Random drug tests to begin at school [MANASQUAN]

The school board unanimously approved a random drug-testing program for the high school Tuesday night.
The program goes into effect immediately and comes on the heels of survey results with students admitting they are drinking and taking drugs at every grade level.
"This is a wonderful addition as a deterrent for the kids from using drugs or alcohol," Schools Superintendent Geraldine Margin said after the vote. "It's been proven to be effective in other districts and will help our students make better decisions."
All student athletes, students participating in co-curricular activities, including school club activities, and any student who elects to participate in the random drug-testing program will be collected into a confidential database from which names will be drawn.
Students will be chosen at random from a computer-generated list for the collection of urine samples, which will be tested for the presence of alcohol, amphetamines, anabolic steroids, barbiturates and a laundry list of common street drugs like marijuana, cocaine, LSD, heroin, methadone, Ecstasy and others.
The test results will be kept confidential and shared only with parents, the student and the school officials involved in the process. The local police will not be informed if a student has tested positive for drug or alcohol use.
"No student will be penalized academically for testing positive for illegal drugs or banned substances," the proposed policy states.
The section goes on to say that the test results "will not be documented in any student's academic records" and that any information about the test results "will not be disclosed to criminal or juvenile authorities."
"Our purpose is to help the student and support that student and the family," Margin said.
Any student testing positive for the first time will have their parents notified and be required to submit to a mandatory medical examination. The student then will be required to attend a minimum of three counseling sessions with a student assistance coordinator, as well as choosing between attending a prevention/education program or signing into and completing a drug and alcohol in-patient rehabilitation program.
Finally, the student would be required to submit to a minimum of four subsequent drug tests. Any positive result will be considered a second offense and push the student into a new level of requirements.
A second positive result will result in the student being immediately barred from sports or extracurricular activities for a minimum of 60 days and signal a new round of tests, sessions and treatment options.
A third positive drug test will get the student barred from sports or extracurricular activities for a full calendar year and new rounds of tests, sessions and treatment options. But it also will force a referral to the state's Division of Youth and Family Services for an investigation.
The testing cycle will be for a full calendar year, and students who fail a drug test in an earlier grade will carry that positive result throughout their time at the high school. So a freshman testing positive will be held responsible for a second or subsequent positive result until senior year is completed.
The results of a 2006-07 American Drug and Alcohol Survey taken by 90 percent of the student body at Manasquan High School showed a steady increase in drug and alcohol use among students from ninth through 12th grade.
Seventy-eight percent of Manasquan High School seniors admitted to drinking alcohol and 66 percent to being drunk, well above the national average of 47 percent and 30 percent respectively.
Marijuana use among high school seniors is nearly double the national average in the survey, and the use of cocaine, heroin and prescription painkillers were above the national averages.

LOL this is a joke. LEts just spend millions of dollars on drug re habilitation centers specifically targeting teens who maybe smoked pot once. Waste of money...
and on top of that, they are so lying about police not being notifid, anyone with brains knows that people who get caught will be publically acknowledged by their peers, then their parents, then the town will know. So i dont know how they plan to keep all information confidential, unless they shove those drug tests up their asses

Not a bad plan assuming that they are testing the administrators first, followed by the teachers second, and the parents third... then test the children, last. Seems only fair to get rid of the bad role models first. Probably ought to drug test all the judges and police before anybody else, just to be safe. Oh, and lets not forget the lawmakers... drug test them as well.

So pretty much if you don't do shit after school, then you are a complete idiot if you get tested.

"The test results will be kept confidential and shared only with parents, the student and the school officials involved in the process."
And down a little bit...
"it also will force a referral to the state's Division of Youth and Family Services for an investigation."
Hmmm.... a bag of f&%^ing lies! Did they even proof-read this manifesto of criminal intent before they circulated it to the public? What a bunch of filth.

I donno. I think we should install cameras in the students homes so that we can keep an eye on them in case they are doing anything that we don't like.

yeah, I'm categorically against punishing students at school for things they do off school property and unrelated to school functions.
i.e. schools should only punish kids for drug use if done on school prop. or at school events, i.e. school prom at private facility.
This idea is stupid, and they have to be lieing, or at least over-advertising the scope of drugs they'll test for. Their is no way they could afford to do anabolic steroid testing or things like that, very expensive to confirm.
Whole idea is stupid. I know many folks who switched to opiates in high school after getting on probation or tested by parents. You can be clean in two days or less from a heroin dose, but might take a week or more for a single use of marijuana... stupid as hell.
If this is enacted, marijuana should be excluded for the sole reason that having it included encourages marijuana users to use pills that are more dangerous and habit forming. I've seen it countless times. I wonder if there's data on it?

Great. Just about every school in the nation is having a bidget crunch, so they decide to waste money drug testing students. I swear, school administrators these days are crazy. I'm glad I'm no longer in the public school system.

Wouldn't punishing users and kicking them out of activities hurt them. They try to make it sound like its nurturing, but then what they describe is anything but.
The result will be that some kids that may smoke less pot because they are in extra curricular activities will end up smoking more because they are kicked off or choose not to participate because they don't want to be tested. It will also (like others mentioned) cause them to use more harmful drugs which are less likely to show up on the test. There will be more deaths from huffing and more brain cells killed by chugging cough medicine.
I hope some parents take a stand and refuse to allow their children to be tested. The sad thing is that if they do it will attract suspicion rather than support. It really is like McCarthyism. I'm sure it was some idiot's idea who knows nothing about drug use and drug testing who came up with it, and anyone with a brain is too afraid to oppose it because it will draw suspicion. I don't know if I'd have the balls to oppose it unless I was 100% clean myself.
I always think it's some kind of cruel joke that marijuana shows up for so long one's system.
I have a good idea...they should test all the administrators at the school too. Put them on the "random" list and see if they still think it's a good idea. Better yet, do hair analysis on the administrators. That might make them think twice about allowing this shit to happen to the kids.
It doesn't seem right that people pay taxes for their kids to go to school, and their kids are denied services. Not because of something that is apparent that they are doing that's causing disruption.
If they have to test the student's urine to know if they are a problem, then they aren't a problem.
What does this teach children about trust? What does it teach them about community?
Fuck!@!!!!!!!!@#@!@!@!@!!!!!!!!!! It gets me soooo mad!

Testing for acid is pretty damn expensive, and I'm sure it's mostly out of your blood quicker than 24 hours, this is a definite proposal from the same people who know nothing about medication or drugs.

I can understand maybe having drug tests before a sport event. But to have it randomly across the school is ridiculous.
