More pure heroin is making its way to the streets of Flagstaff, say police, and leading to more overdoses.
The local anti-narcotics task force unit is putting the squeeze on the heroin trade and users in the city. Metro agents have served three search warrants in three weeks that have netted 21 grams of the drug and six arrests.
The searches, on three Flagstaff homes, have also included the seizure of three guns, marijuana from a small in-home growing operation, $1,500 in cash and assorted paraphernalia, said Sgt. Tom Boughner from the Flagstaff Police Department. The most recent bust was on Monday at a home on the 400 block of West Cherry Avenue.
The arrestees include alleged users and dealers, Boughner said. Their names are not being released at this time, as not all charges have been filed and the investigations continue.
The seized Mexican black tar heroin has a street value of $4,500 to $5,000 and represents more than 200 dosage units.
Local police have noted a spike in heroin abuse, responding to both overdoses and other crimes where the drug has played a role.
Boughner said the drug, which is often injected intravenously, is also being smoked more as some users want to avoid the stigma of IV drug use. He said there is no profile of heroin users, and that the drug's use cuts across social groups.
Police have taken an "aggressive" stance with heroin because of the dangers associated with the drug, which is becoming more pure, Boughner said. Higher-purity heroin can lead to more overdose emergencies.
Investigators will continue to follow up on leads gathered from the recent busts, with more warrants and arrests expected, Boughner said.
