The growing problem of drug criminals setting up cannabis farms in Cumbria has prompted a police warning after 18 have been busted in the past three years. Officers say the county fits the bill perfectly for illegal drug factories, with growers favouring remote rural bases for what the force calls a "major manufacturing industry".
They have warned of spin-off dangers, with cannabis growers often hacking illegally into electricity supplies to heat their plants and posing the risk of fires or even explosions.
Police revealed last month that they had uncovered a £1m cannabis farm in west Cumbria, with detectives seizing 1,600 plants.
Another factory was found in the Eden Valley, housing 1,300 cannabis plants.
Assistant Chief Constable Graham Sunderland has urged the public to phone officers if they see anything suspicious in buildings near their homes.
He highlighted tell-tale signs such as people moving into previously empty properties, setting up new greenhouses or blacking out windows.
Mr Sunderland said: "They are using illegal ways of heating, connecting up to electricity supplies. The dangers of fires and explosions that go with that are immense."
The warning comes as the Government moved recently to tighten the law surrounding cannabis, reclassifying it from a class C to a class B drug.

well if cannabis and the growing of it were legal then it would be very simple to take proper safety precautions and prevent such fires

exactly, by legalizing they will be able to set up a protocol on how to properly install electric fixtures along with proper irrigation. And if caught bypassing these rules, then fine the individuals, and order them to get new equipment. This is something that i believe can be stretched with every cities building inspecting agencies. but no...they choose to keep it illegal, and actually putting people at risk of fires or apparantly explosions lol. personally i have never heard of a explosion from growing.

but the dangers come from people bypassing the meter to avoid paying massive electric bills. The government's never going to tell you how to safely steal electricity!
Seriously, I wonder whether if legal it would be economically viable to grow under lights. Probably importing from India or somewhere with lots of sun would be cheaper.
