The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has expressed concern over the high incidence of abuse of nail polish and petrol as stimulants by youths.
Akunyili, who stated this at a one-day sensitisation forum on drug/substance abuse in Minna, Niger State capital, on Tuesday, disclosed that from a rapid situation assessment conducted by NAFDAC on drugs commonly abused, nail polish among others, ranked high.
She disclosed that from findings, cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) and cocaine contributed the highest admission of patients in the rehabilitation centres across the country.
According to Akunyili, who was represented by a director, Hauwa Kiyari, the other drugs and substances highly abused are cough remedies containing codeine, which she said were highly abused by mostly commercial motorcycle operators.
Other issues she mentioned were sniffing of solutions in cold patch used by vulcanizers, sniffing of sand scooped from filthy gutters and latrines, prescription drugs such as diazepam, tramadol, ketamine and so on; and mixing monosodium glutamate (white magi) with cola drinks
The director-general stated that the Rapid Situation Assessment conducted by NAFDAC in Minna and other parts of the country followed the published report in The PUNCH Newspaper of 12th March 2008 on the Niger State Governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu’ s concern on the increasing rate in which some substances were being abused by the youth.
She regretted that while the nation battled with the increase in cocaine use especially in Port Harcourt, Lagos and Kano, Afghanistan was faced with increased production of opium, while Asia was battling with the abuse of Amphetamine type stimulants.
She commended the United Nations for earmarking the 26th of June every year as the International Day Against Drug abuse and trafficking, while describing this year’s theme as Drug Cultivation and Control, adding that the focus in Nigeria would be on cannabis sativa, the only drug cultivated locally.
