Now that we've got ebay/amazon ads, I was thinking... how to get shroomery money from it?
I'll have to buy books and stuff coming up for school and will use both those places.
I think ythan said he doesn't get money from clicks, only converted sales, so is the shroomery enriched from anyone that buys any product, from say ebay or amazon, after clicking on an ad?
So if I need to buy a book, and click on a generic amazon ad, then navigate to the the book I actually need and buy it, does shroomery get money even if the ad I clicked on isn't the book I buy? Do they save cookies or something that say where you came from, and credit you guys for purchases made during that visit to the site?
Just curious, since I probably use my share of bandwidth around here, and don't really have much money to buy a supporter account, if there's anything us book-buyers and ebayers coudl do to help out.
I'm also curious about ebay, do they specifically approve your website? I'm kinda surprised they advertise here, given how paranoid they seem to be about their image, and how tightly they regulate the items that can be sold at their site... I would have thought they would be bitchy about where they advertise.

That's very nice of you to ask. Our affiliate agreements are pretty standard in that we're not supposed to solicit for people to click on our ads, they only want legitimately generated traffic. So I should be clear that I'm just answering your question, I don't mean to suggest that people go out of their way to credit us as a referral unless we helped generate the sale.
With that said, Amazon is a long time affiliate and their referral program is pretty generous. When you click on an ad or this referral link you get a tracking cookie, and then if you make a purchase within 24 hours we generally get a 7% commission on that sale (it can vary, see their payment structure).
The eBay ads are new as I'm sure you're aware. In the past eBay's affiliate program was managed by Commission Junction, and we were part of it briefly but CJ dropped us due to our content. However, recently eBay switched over to managing their own affiliate program so I re-applied and we were accepted. It does appear as though they manually approve affiliates, and I was a bit surprised to get accepted as well, but they could always drop us in the future like what happened with CJ and Google. Anyway for now we don't even know if it's profitable. But it sounds good enough, when you click one of the eBay ads or this referral link you get a 7 day tracking cookie and then if you win a bid or buy-it-now, we get 50% - 75% of eBay's profit from that auction (again, see their payment structure). We also get $25 - $35 for referring a new user who opens an account and completes a purchase within 30 days.
So yeah, I hope that answers your question and thanks again for thinking of us, and good luck on your upcoming semester.

Good to know this.
The cookie will still work if I'm using anon link referrals here, right?

Good question, if you have it set to "hide referrer using a URL redirector" then the cookie should still work fine, but if it's set to "hide IP and referrer using a web-based proxy" then I think it probably won't get set. That's only for links in posts though, if you click a banner it will always work.
