Aminata Ceasaria

Found these at a park today. This is a sanctuary and I found these in a 30 min span. These things are everywhere. It seems like the ants have something to do with the mycorrhizael action. In like 75% of the specimens I found, there were the same kind of black ants in an around the cup. Very cool vibrant looking mushrooms though. Anyways, I know they are edible, but have not tried them yet. Does anyone have any special recipes or suggestions. If I enjoy them there are tons more to go grab for the table. Anyone eaten them before?

I was just talking about this mushroom with someone today. I have never eaten it, nor will I.
Just for the sake of those that read these threads could you post the description so no one gets confused?

I'm gonna take some closer pics. I guess the question is then What are they? None of them are opened yet. I saw many that were opened and they had a ring. O.K. For everyone else.
Scattered in fairy rings, on the woods floor.
Growing with cup under pine needle straw.
Under pinus trees surrounding a lake in northwest louisiana.
gills; whitish yellow, free, close
stipe: thick, even very thick, smooth, stuffed with sponge becoming hollow, yellow
veil: universal veil white, partial veil yellow. leaving pendant stalk ring on mature specimen, and cuplike sack on all specimen. some rhizomorphs observed.
Cap: smooth, red to yellow toward margin, radially lined, young specimens hemispherical, maturing to almost flat with knob in middle. Fading after opening
WARNING !! It should be noted to any noobs reading this thread, that this is a complex genera of amanitas and many look alike can be DEADLY POISINOUS!!! Always exercise extreme caution when dealing with amanitas!!!

note the white stuff on these caps is tissue not flecks. They are all red and smooth.

I think North American ceasaria are often called jacksonii, hemibapha, and umbonata, not much work has been done to seperate them.

According to Guzman:
Quote:
Amanita caesarea s. qtr. is unknown in the U.S.A. and Canada, but it grows in Mexico, although it is a rare fungus. Amanita hemibapha s. qtr. is unknown in America. All the Mexican species of this complex have a great traditional and economic importance as foodstuff, also in Guatemala. A list of more than 60 common names in Mexico and Guatemala is provided, several of them in Indian languages. A critical revision of taxonomic features is discussed. Color, form, and striation of pileus and length, color and desquamation of the stipe are the main macroscopic features, and spore size, and subhymenium sickness are among the main microscopic features. The A. caesarea-complex belongs to Section Caesareae and is formed by at least 13 species. This complex is divided in Stirps Caesareae (with A. caesarea s. qtr. as the type) and Stirps Hemibaphae (with A. hemibapha as the type), according to the thickness of the subhymenium (3-5 cells thick in the former and 1-3 cells in the latter). Species in the Stirps Caesareae here described besides A. caesarea are: A. basil sp. nov., A. tecomate sp. nov., A. tullossii sp. nov., and A. yema sp. nov. Species in the Stirps Hemibaphae here discussed are: A. arkansana, A. caesareoides, A. hemibapha, A. jacksonii, A. Iaurae sp. nov. A. mafingensis, A. masasiensis, and A. tanzanica, of which A. jacksonii and A. Iaurae are full described. A key with all these taxa is presented.

Also I've compared these caesaria and hemibapha here:

http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/species/caesarea.html
Yours are so young I couldn't detect many, if any, differences.

A. hemibapha and A. cesaria are european/mediterranean species.
I am 99% sure this is Amanita jacksonii.
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/amanita_jacksonii.html
Its Cactu's favorite mushroom to eat.
I hesitate to tell someone else to eat an Amanita, however if I was there I would cook it up without delay.
I don't know of any toxic lookalikes.
You could get a second opinion from Cactu or mushroomobserver.org.

I think A. jacksonii is the name that's currently being used.
The North American Caesar's Mushrooms have not been studied nearly as well as the European species. I am not aware of any poisonings form them. Reports I have heard on their edibility seem to indicate that they don't taste nearly as good as the European A. caesarea.
Happy mushrooming!

Ohh. those are nice specimens , pin still , i was about to post some find and my recent find of amanita caesaria , as you point the situation is complex , but i have eat all the variations , long time we used to call all A. caesaria, but know i think i have eat many species some that resemble hemibapha, jacksonii, tecomate, yema, and maybe some laurae since iam in the area where is endemic. i have post many pictures in the past of what i call yellow and red variation with small and big fruit body strains in each kind and slight differences but no to much differences in the taste , even amanita vaginata well it complex , taste some how similar not exactly , for sure one of the best mushrooms to eat alone , i only add , butter and melted cheese, to make my quesadillas , hmmm, truly the food of the gods , emperors and Cesar`s. iam going to celebrate a toga party soon you will see..................... i will post my pictures also all my best keep it safe , with knowledge
