DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!
    #8537770 - 06/18/08 04:49 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Please don't forget to put SOMETHING... ANYTHING... between your cakes and your perlite layer... Or this will happen...

You cant even see the mess, but the mushrooms were growing from the bottoms of the cakes and falling over, getting perlite stuck to them and all brused up.  Funky.

that happened to my friend the first time he grew. he noticed that perlite was stuck to the cake, he just flipped it over. it did ok, but could have done better otherwise. those first cakes were fucked from the get go.
monotub is where it's at.

Hehe.  It should be fine if you just elevate it off the perlite :P

Really, even WITHOUT the barrier between your cake and perlite, that sort of thing will still happen from time to time. The difference is, aside from the benefit to a separate and moist vermiculite layer that won't be disrupted by the perlite shedding it, you risk less contamination from having the bottom surface of your cake stuck to a mediating surface.

I found a twice-wrapped piece of cut cardboard works wonders when wrapped two or three times in foil. The jar lids work well, most of the time, but sometimes a disposable base can be nice. Depends on your situation.
