Federal grand jurors in Huntsville have indicted 33 people, including seven from northwest Alabama, who are accused of participating in a major drug ring that operated in three states and Mexico.
U.S. Attorney Alice Martin announced the 138-count indictment Tuesday. She said all the defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana.
Greg Borland, assistant special agent in charge with the Drug Enforcement Administration, said the drug ring operated from September 2004 through May 2008 in Alabama, Texas and California. At least 20 Alabamians were among those indicted, with most of those living in the Morgan County area.
Charges also were filed against people living in Texas, California, Oregon and Mississippi, authorities said.
The seven northwest Alabama residents arrested were:
George Deshawn Smith, 32, Muscle Shoals.
Tanya Carletta Harris, 37, Muscle Shoals.
Quintin Dangelo McCoy, 25, Town Creek.
Pamela Ruth Terry, 42, Courtland.
Yolanda Goodlow, 32, Hillsboro.
Reco Willingham, 31, Hillsboro.
Dave Willingham IV, 44, Town Creek.
If convicted, conspiracy carries the punishment of 10 years to life in prison, a fine up to $4 million and a term of supervised release of not less than five years.
Authorities seized 35 kilograms of cocaine, 85 pounds of marijuana and more than $400,000 in cash in 11 separate drug raids that were conducted in mid-May.
Officials with the U.S. Attorney's office said Reco Willingham and two others also were indicted on accusations that they were conducting a continuing criminal enterprise during the same period as well as money laundering and possession of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking offense.
Several of the suspects are also charged with multiple counts of using a communications facility, specifically a telephone, in the commission of a drug trafficking offense. They also face drug trafficking offenses, including distribution of controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and attempt to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.
Martin said the DEA was the lead agency in the
investigation.
"This investigation and the indictment will significantly impact a large drug trafficking organization, which has been operating in the Northern District of Alabama and has been receiving large quantities of drugs from Texas, California and Mexico," Martin said.
Local drug task forces from Colbert, Lauderdale and Lawrence counties were all involved in the investigation.
Lawrence County officials said a search of Reco Willingham's residence resulted in 20 kilos of cocaine and 80 pounds of marijuana being confiscated.
"This was a big operation," said Amard Martin, director of the Lawrence County Drug Task Force. "We had been dealing with some of these people for a while when DEA started their investigation, so we just continued to work with them."
Curtis Burns, director of the Colbert County Drug Task Force, said his office participated in the investigation for several months.
"We did surveillance in our area and provided intelligence concerning people that were involved in the investigation," Burns said.
Myron Crunk, director of the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force, said members of his department conducted surveillance, collected evidence, tracked suspects, identified persons of interest and identified property of the suspects.
He said the department shared drug-related information on a daily basis with DEA agents.
Borland said the combined effort allowed authorities to "completely dismantle an organization that utilized the trucking industry to smuggle more than 250 kilograms of cocaine and thousands of pounds of marijuana from Mexico to northern Alabama, and to smuggle millions of dollars in bulk currency back to Mexico. Clearly, these arrests and seizures will significantly affect the availability of drugs in the area."

They can charge you for using a telephone now in drug deals? And how many different ways can they charge you for the same thing? Distribution, intent to distribute, attempting to possess with intent to distribute, conspiring to attempt to possess with intent to distribute, conspiring to conspire to attempt, etc. Thats fucking ridiculous. It shouldn't even be legal, its like gang raping someone repeatedly with the legal system.
