ECC or non-ECC memory for home-built NAS? (OpenSolaris + ZFS)
    #8546773 - 06/21/08 08:32 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Hey,

I'm planning on building a NAS box running OpenSolaris with ZFS to store all my digital media.

ZFS looks really cool, I like the idea of redundant storage pools that you can add disks to easily, plus copy-on-write looks useful in the case of accidentally deleting files.

Is it worth shelling out for ECC memory for a home NAS box? It won't be storing anything critical really, just video, photographs etc.

Also, do most modern motherboards accept ECC memory, or do you have to buy one specifically for that purpose?

Also, does anyone happen to know if torrentflux can be made to run on OpenSolaris, or alternatively if there's a decent torrent client with a HTTP interface that runs on that OS? Is setting up Apache/MySQL etc easy on OpenSolaris? I have no experience with the OS at all, but I'm tempted to run it due to the native ZFS support (I know FreeBSD supports ZFS, but from reading tutorials on the web, it seems setting up ZFS on OpenSolaris is easier).

Thoughts?

Thanks :sun:

I can argue it both ways, but were I doing it for myself, I would go with ECC memory.

You have to check the board specs.  Most (if not all) server class motherboards will accept ECC memory.

Yes.
