The season comes with a thunder.. UPDATED! - new photos + an interesting Psilocybe sp. (coprophila?)
    #8543948 - 06/20/08 10:43 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I'd love to share some hunting pics from a recent expedition (more of an adventure...!) -

Firstly chased by stampeding cattle -

Random unidentified bracket-like fungi -

Crazy big Gyms (shame these aren't active here because I reckon I could have bagged about 50kgs in an hour! I've never seen so many....) -

A fairy garden of Laccarias (thanks Alan!) -

DEADLY gallerina - I can't believe just how similar these guys can look to subaeruginosa from above (be careful!) -

Subaeruginosa love -

The world's smallest Sub, and then a very chunky one -

Some scenery shots -

Bag love -

:mushroom2:

Thanks Alan! I will correct that. I don't suppose you can tell which ones from the photo? Are they worth targeting for edibility? There were literally thousands....

Just to make sure you have got them right cactu, they are 'subaeruginosa', not 'subbalteatus'.

I am pretty sure they are 'Gymnopilus junonius' - but I have yet to find one that stains whatsoever when I collect it. There has been lots of discussion between Aussie shroomers and so far the conclusion is that Aussie gyms are not active.

 - thats pretty small! It would be hard to judge though without a decent scale. It's not often you hear people boasting "mine's smaller than your's"!

just cuz the gyms dont stain doesnt mean they are not active. i eat gyms all the time that do not stain and are active.

Do they taste like shit? I've been wanting to eat them for a while but I just can't come at it when there are subs all over the ground as well. But honestly, there are SO many at this spot so it could be worth it.

I believe that some variants of Gymnopilus junonius are active, but they are supposed to be both very mild and extremely bitter. So to trip you would have to eat many foul tasting mushrooms, not something that is necessary when that many subs are around.

Yes gyms are very bitter, maybe try a few specimens in a tea too check for activity you could be missing out. But im the same as you i found sum gyms the other day then found a ton of weilii and have yet too eat the gyms i found cuz weilii are so potent.

If you make gyms into a tea, and add a lot of sugar its meant to be ok

Hey guys, the hunting forum is incredibly busy these days...
Here is an update from the area about 6 days after those first photos were taken -

:mushroom2: Remember this cluster?

This is it all grown up 6 days later -

---> --->

:mushroom2: A large Agaricus sp. -

:mushroom2: Subaeruginosa mycelium running through the grass (notice the pins in the top right of the photos) -

And a close up of that pin -

:mushroom2: Threesome with an onlooker  -

:mushroom2: An interesting psilocybe sp (I think coprophila). It left a purple/black spore print and was growing directly from cow dung. Firstly in the field -

Then later back at base (note the hygrophanous cap) -

:mushroom2: A forest of Laccarias -

:mushroom2: The siamese twin -

:mushroom2: The final harvest and some prints to embark on an epic adventure -

:mushroom2: Some scenery shots -

I love winter....

Not technically, but they won't kill you so I guess that you could call them edible. They wouldn't be targeted as a gourmet mushroom but neither would a psilocybe...
