Wow, 3 days. Either you have a fast strain, or it very well could be contamination. If it is mycelia, you will see little white dots evenly spread through the grain. In time each dot will grow out in a little radius of "fans" or ropes. If using spore water, you may see tormentose before seeing rhizomorphs, or your fuzz. If using liquid fermentation inoculate the fans are immediate. After the spots increase in size to aprox. the diameter of a dime, or your pinky, shake the jars. When they come back, the jars should be bright white, depending on your species. Some mycelia is more linear vice rhizomorphic as well as having different shades of white. Cobweb mold is white as well, but it is easily detected; if you get fuzz growing well above your substrate, 1/2 to 1 inch above, and it looks like cotton, and it is FAST growing, that's it. In time it will turn gray, giving it away. If the jars come back extremely fluffy, well above the top of the substrate, and it is hard to shake apart that's it. Beware of baccillus (sp?) it is recognized by uninoculated grain. If several grains have not been taken, this is a sign. Beware of anything that is not fully white and completely taken. Can give off an odor reminiscent of sour green apples. If it's white, that's outa sight!------------------

I have had full colonization of jars in 7 days with rye. It all depends on the temps, the quality of the rye, and the water content of the rye, and of course the strain. I find (if using agar) it helps to orient your strain to the rye by griding a bunch of kernels up into powder and then mixing this into your agar when you make it. Since the mycelium on the dish is already aclimatized it takes off right away. Sounds like you are on track.

Three days is plenty of time for noticeable mycelium growth. I have a strain of cubensis that will completly colonize a quart of rye in three days.
