Two days ago I would have said no but yesterday Workman told me that he found some foes with slight bluing at the base, relatively short stems and brown spores.

I'd say go ahead and try it.The books say they are active from confusion stemming from collections of foes mixed with subbs, if I got that right.Foes (I think) only contain trytophan.
Who knows though.

I dont think so if they do produce active compounds then its not enough too do anything, ive know people too eat tons of foes and get nothing from it other than sum diarrhea.

People mix foes, and subbs up...Thats where these rumors come from. Bottom line.

I used to think that myself, but even Stamets in PMotW mentions a Californian species that stains blue at the stem base which may be an active strain of foes or a new species. So the jury is still out on this one. It seems that just about every species of Panaeolus has a few anecdotal reports of activity. This may indicate that as a group there are potentially weakly active strains of every Panaeolus species currently considered inactive. I now check the stem base of every Panaeolus I see for even a hint of bluing for later work, just in case.

I'll have to keep an eye out when I pick them. I have never really paid any attention to the stem base. Only the gills really.

I started some foe spores on agar a few days ago. I was doing this just to have a clean culture for storage but now I might attempt fruiting them. From what i understand some mushrooms that are inactive/weakly active will show more activity in culture.
Has anyone ever attempted fruiting pan foes indoors?
