put it inside a black bin liner or a cupboard.

I think you're talking about patching the casing layer, which you do with more casing mix. But that comes later.

I spraypaint the bottom of mine with black krylon spraypaint. I don't have the patience to finagle a piece of black plastic and sanitize it each time and tape it, etc.. etc..
Then just stick it in a closet or wherever your dark place is going to be. Throw a blanket over it and remove it a few times a day if you want.

polyflakes, I just read an excellent tek called 50/50 or 50/50+...can't remember as a waked and baked this morning
putting my first study together and I think this may answer your question. In the article, it said to get black plastic nursery trays from Home Depert. You can cut to size. I guess that means you cut the plastic tray halfway down the long side, then overlap each half for a variable length tray.
The black keeps light from penetrating your substrate and no pinning until it reaches the top and that is from what I understand to be when you want it to pin.
nOOb so take it for what it is worth

I use 50Qt clear Rubbermaid totes. You are wasting your time if you put tape, paint or any other blackout material on the outside of the bin. You are wasting your time if you buy a bin and cut a clear "window" in the top of the lid.
Throw a blanket or dark plastic wrap over it and leave it in a corner if you don't have a dark closet or basement to leave it in when colonizing, I wouldn't recommend wrapping anything around it or putting a whole bin in a bag though.
You'll want to line the inside of the tub with aluminum foil (my preference) or a trash bag before you layer in the spawn and substrate, this will be of primary importance as it serves to limit side pinning as the liner material is pulled in by the colonizing substrate.
The first monotubs I did I was foolish enough to wrap double tape around the bottom of my bins, and I still had side pinning like a motherfucker. The little babies were smashed up against the plastic like a bucket of worms, and you could scrape a sheet of them off the side of the substrate after removing it from the bin. All of it dead weight and wasted energy, because the fruits were too stringy and malformed, hard to clean appropriately, etc. In the trash bin, just like those tape liners

Your notn going to have pinning unless you give it light, air and humidity.

I use clear tubs as well. 2 layers of black ducttape works great.

my friend uses the trashbag method. it works well because as the substrate shrinks the bag stays stuck to it, which reduces side pinning quite well, being as fresh air can't get down there. if you want to avoid early pinning, leave them in the closet. you don't need to put a blanket over them or anything, they can get some light, just don't open the closet very much. you don't want to smother them, but you don't want them to get fresh air.
this is a good read according to roger rabbit, though, 82 degrees and higher slow your grow down. everything else is pretty good info.

Black trash bag isn't that hard.
Figure out how to cut it to the proper size when you're planning your spawn run and cutting holes in your tub.
Get some 100mph tape or gorilla tape, because it sticks better than regular duct tape.
Go in your "lab" with all your materials. Swab the bag with alcohol and tape it in the bottom. Then lay in your spawn and bulk sub.
I stuck my tub on top of another (inverted) tub with a blanket over the thing to minimize airflow and light without totally sealing it off. (The myc likes higher CO2 levels while colonizing, and having less FAE during colonization lets you induce pinning by increasing FAE when the time is right)
