Galvinized trash can for bulk pasturization?
    #853993 - 08/30/02 07:31 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I really need a new container for pasturization. My canning pot isn't big enough. I want a steel drum, but cannot find one. My alternative would be to use a metal trashcan. the main problems i see are that it is galvinized. Galvinization can be burnt off, causing toxic gasses. Has anyone used something similar? I have heard of changing the household hot water settings, but that is too dangerous in my mind.
i would be hoping to heat it with a gas burner.

Look in your phone book -- under "drums - steel". Almost very city has some place that sells them. Get one, take it to a welding shop & have it cut in half. Then cobble on -- as in bolt -- or weld -- a couple chain hooks or clevises on either side of each half, so you can tip & lift the things.

Presto chango -- now you have 2.

Once full of dung/straw & water -- one of these puppies is real HEAVY. So you better have a heavy metal stand & chain hoist to lift & tip the puppy & a place to drain it.

You will also need one large out/door gas burner or electric heating element to heat the monster. A galanized wash tub or trash can will also work. The small amount of zinc off it -- isn't going to hurt anything.

Don't let your "goose" get scalded or cooked.

I'm hoping to get a welder so i can make my own stand. I just have to find one at a good price. Thanks for the tip. i'll try that. Is this what you use? I'm going to be using a propane burner from the looks of it. Hopefully i will be able to steam pasturize a whole bale of straw at once. I like stammets set up in the mushroom cultivator. I just saw a copy in barns and noble.

The Raccoon's FOAF started with a big ass canning pot. Then an even larger pot from a industrial sized kitchen. Then a half drum, then whole drum & has now moved on to a 220 volt electric steam generator & high pressure holding tank. Ya gotta love those goverment surplus places. You can find all sorts of weird things that you can buy cheap & reapply to another use.

The steam generator, various stainless steel parts, tank, pipe, fittings & gauges, all total after retro-fitting, about $300 & change. Not counting the Raccoon's time. Not bad, since a grown man can crawl into it.  New, you could not even buy the tank for that much. It is rated @ 200 psi.

When building your stand for the drum make it heavy duty. Dont go out and buy a welder to do the work, hire someone to do it for you. It sounds like you dont have much experience welding and to hire someone should cost you more than $60???
A problem I have run into is not having a "burner casting" that pumps out enough BTU's. Do a search on the net for a casting which can kick out enough heat. There is nothing worse than waiting 2 hours to get the water up to temp.

Ok, i?m burner shopping. Here?s something i found on ebay. I?m not sure how it fits in exactly, but it has a 50,000-200,000 btu rating. I don?t think it?s a burner, but it drew my curiosity because i don?t know what it is.

propane water heater, eh. That would actually work. I would have to rig up the plumbing. i wanted hot water in the barn anyways. That way i weould only need a small burner to keep it up to heat.
I just found these links on making a burner.
