What´s up with my "Plaster of Paris" Rye Jar
    #8536096 - 06/18/08 02:59 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

This was my first attempt using rye with multispore inoculation. Unfortunately I used "Plaster of Paris" instead of gypsum. I did add the plaster before pressure cooking and not during the soak phase. Despite my apprehensions that it would end up a not shakeable mass it did shake rather well.
Mycelium grow started ok. It looked rhizomorphic albeit a bit "thin".
After my first shake mycelium grow was so rapid I first thought it was mold. During the shake my Polyfill filter fell into the jar and I had to do a rescue mission with glovebox and all. Damn! After that I was afraid to shake it  So the shake was not thorough enough, and it took a long time until all parts where colonized.

I really think this Jar stalled because of lack of moisture.

-"Plaster of Paris" powder made it really dry
-I even added dry vermiculite, drying it further
-Mycelium grow after the shake was incredibly fast but than stalled

So I just wanted to share this and would like to hear educated guesses concerning this strange development.

As you can see it fruits right in the jar.

Furthermore my question is  what shall I do with this jar. Toss it, still case it, pick the few pins...?

Spawn then case. Looks fine to me. There's hyphal knots all over it so it's dying to fruit.

Thanks tripsis !
I had already given up on that jar. Not that I thought it was an obvious contamination, but it just never fully colonized the rye and started to fruit premature.
Please note that it took more than 20 days until it was thus far. So maybe my chances are better with a straight casing?

But I am thrilled to hear that spawning to bulk is considered as an option at this point and would duly proceed.

Still I am pondering about breaking it up in a tray, allow mycelium to "reknit", hydrate in running water  and then case it with 50/50 vermiculite, peat moss.

But going for spawn sounds like heaven..

It appears fully colonised to me. Sometimes it won't get that totally white look, it just depends on the type of mycelium growth you have.

Considering the amount of pins there are, you may be better off just casing it. Just give it a sniff before you do so, if it has a nice fresh mushroom smell it's all good. If it's sour, toss  it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Was not sure about that...

I wouldn't spawn to bulk.  If it fruited prior to full colonization, something was wrong.  The 'uncolonized' parts are probably contaminated with bacteria, especially considering the filter mishap.

You'll have better chances casing the rye, but don't hold out much hope.

UPDATE

Stumbled over these beautiful in vitro jars
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7071844#7071844

So I will just leave them there...

As expected in vitro was fine, but just yielded a few mushrooms. So after picking the few, I cased it with 50/50.

Turned out fine. Just now spouts out its last flush.
