I have some Vermiculite, Peat moss and calcium carbonate. I figure I should do 50/50 and add 5% Lime to it. Should I PC the mix before adding the lime, and how long should I PC 1 Quart jar of the mix to make sure its sterile? Thanks
And also, using 2 cups of verm and 2 cups peat moss I will need to use 5% of a total 4 cup mixture? thanks!!

You don't want to sterilize it; pasteurize it instead. There are a lot of beneficial bacteria that you want to preserve.

So pastuerizing, can you give me a quick method? Could I just cook the quart jar over the stovetop until it comes to a boil and then remove, like RR said? Thanks in advance!

When using lime, you only count the peat, not the verm. If using calcium carbonate, use it at 10% by volume. Use the same amount of gypsum. Mix the lime and gypsum together, and then mix with the dry peat before adding moisture. Lastly, mix in the premoistened verm and make a final adjustment to field capacity before pasteurizing at 140F to 160F for an hour.
However you chose to go about getting the center of the substrate or casing mix to that temperature for that amount of time will properly pasteurize the material. Don't sterilize. Pasteurized peat is fairly resistant to mold infections for several weeks. Sterilized peat is not. RR
