Big Bolete, ID help please
    #8533888 - 06/17/08 02:35 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

hey, this is a pretty big bolete I found today. I cant really see anything that looks to much like it in my guide. wondering if any of you guys know what it is off the top of your head : )
I left it where I found it cos it was the only one- thus I have no spore print. I didnt have the heart to bring it home if I in all likely hood might not eat it.
Thanks guys! Pics to follow.

Habitat:  deciduous woods, around oak
Gills: Cream
Stem: yellowish/light brown
Cap: Cream or very light brown with a very slight purple tone...very slight
No bruising observed
Location: Nth west Arkansas

very sturdy mushroom and it must have weighed about half a pound or so. do you think its edible? or one of the few toxic boletes?

If it has cream colored gills it is either an immature Boletus or a mature Leccinum or Tylopilus species.

Some pics would help.

How developed are the gills?

What is the texture of the stipe?

Are there any more mature specimens with different colored gills?

Any bitter taste?

What kind of tree was nearby?

Are you sure they were gills and not pores?

This may help:

Do a Google Image search on Gyroporus castaneus and Boletus pallidus.  That might give you a better idea on which one it might be.

The pore surface looks a little pinkish so I am going to guess that its a Tylopilus species.

The first thing we need to know is if the flesh is bitter.

Try this key:
